This story is the first of my series, Star Trek: Beyond. "A Taking of Leave" and several of the stories that follow were first printed in a 1980's fanzine and have since been heavily rewritten. In this story Spock takes leave from the Enterprise to participate in research on a colony planet. While there he encounters a mysterious halfling who tests his Vulcan discipline and changes his life.

Did you ever wonder how color re-entered the bland world of Starfleet after ST:TMP? This story was written to address that issue, as well as a helpful critique by Trekfan regarding Spock and Sulu's relationship in "Cristabeth" (which now follows this one in my Star Trek:Beyond series). I have also made appropriate adjustments in "Cristabeth".

A day at a popular amusement park goes sour for T'Beth and McCoy while she is visiting her father on Earth. Meanwhile, Spock and Lauren Fielding have their own interlude.

Lauren learns that the new Spock has returned to Earth to testify at Kirk's court-martial. Her Spock is dead. She stood over his coffin. How can she expect anything from this stranger, when Spock even feels like a stranger to himself?

Spock's self-confidence is shaken when a psyche evaluation leaves him grounded from the Enterprise, but Lauren refuses to give up on him.

Lauren Fielding encounters Sybok when he takes over the Enterprise. It seems that Spock has not told her everything about the renegade Vulcan. Sybok is fascinated with his brother's woman, and Spock's loyalties are even more deeply torn.

Spock's daughter, T'Beth, cannot accept the fact that he is marrying Lauren Fielding--and she's not the only one opposed to the marriage. A surprise bachelor party and a trying reception test Spock's Vulcan endurance, but at day's end they are truly one and together.

Spock and Lauren have completed their week of bonding and are back serving aboard the Enterprise when a shuttle crash strands Lauren with Chris Chapel. Not exactly a vacation...
