rn

A reluctant, newly promoted captain is given command of a 90-year old Constitution-class starship brought out of storage and refit during the waning days of the Dominion War. Now, in the aftermath of that destructive conflict, the Gibraltar is assigned to allied occupied Cardassian space. Their mission is to assist with the desperate humanitarian aid effort to rebuild a shattered Cardassian nation.

The crew of Gibraltar is not the finest ever assembled. They are an average Starfleet crew with limited resources assigned to tasks better suited to larger, more capable vessels. Nevertheless, Captain Donald Sandhurst and his crew struggle to fulfill their duty and accomplish their missions during a dark chapter of the Federation's history.

Summary:

The USS Kestrel, an ageing Miranda class, serving as part of the Border Service has the thankless task of patrolling some of the murkier corners of the Federation.                                                        As the seat of Federation power in a dangerous and wild region of space, the Kestrel acts to paraphrase her firebrand captain, Captain Gregory McGregor, 'as the rule and the law, the line in the sand, the first and last line of defence for the Federation'. They can't call in the cavalry because they are the cavalry. They stand the line, they duke it out, they shout them down; they are the Border Patrol Service, otherwise known as the Border Dogs.                                                                                                       A ramshackle, rough and ready crew, led by the acerbic, sarcastic, bombastic, over the top, pain-in-the-ass, coarse and unprofessional Captain Gregory McGregor. Just the type of behaviour to get stuff on the border done! There's no time for Jean-Luc's niceties here!
The Border Dogs might be seen as the ‘poor cousins' of the Fleet and the Miranda might be seen as the ‘Ford pick-up of Starfleet' but the Kestrel in the humble opinion of her Captain shows the Fleeters how to do things the proper way.

Summary:

Stardate 44000.4:  The Federation starship USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain William T. Riker, failed to recover Captain Picard and destroy the Borg cube.  Instead, the cube assimilated Earth, turning Sector 001 into another Borg colony world.

With the seat of the Federation now in ruin, the rest of the Federation members moved quickly, calling out to every neighboring race, asking for assistance.  The next target on the Borg's agenda was Vulcan, and while Starfleet did it's best to fend off the incoming cube, it was the Klingon High Council which acted to save the lives of over a billion Vulcan citizens, by evacuating them from their homes.

After the assimilation of Vulcan, it was clear that each of the Federation member worlds could easily be their next target.  It was then that K'mpec came forward with the might of the Klingon Empire and took the reins of the remaining mobile forces, including Starfleet (what was left of it).  The surviving members of the makeshift Federation Council voted unanimously to accept the Empire's leadership, by forming a new body of government: the Galaxy Alliance.

This story arc focuses on the Mirror Universe version of Montgomery Scott, for the most part, though the side stories have a whole lot of other characters and a whole lot of people you might not expect show up. Starting with his life as a rebel engineer, and Empire-created orphan, it follows how he got 'drafted' into Empire service and the rather cold-blooded results of that, all the way through the TOS era. He starts out as the hero of the story, but in the end... well, it's very much up to the reader how they view him.

This is a violent tale, but not entirely. Like most mirror stories, there are mentions of sex, violence and lots of other stuff, but it's not really glorified and never can be called gratuitous. It is also very plot-heavy in how things tie together, hence the reading order explained below. Just remember that he was born in 2222 and you should be fine.

Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace is the main story of the arc, and stands alone. It's written in past-to-present-to-past style. The rest of the stories, from Another Man's Treasure to Inevitable are all POV pieces that enhance the main arc. Those are meant to be read in chronological order.

Summary:

Sigils and Unions logoRecent history has not been kind to the Cardassian people. Following protracted wars with the Federation and now the Klingon Empire, the Cardassian Union has been absorbed into the Dominion with promises of greater glory than Cardassia has ever known.

Given this tumultuous history and tightly-controlled society, it is easy to look across the border and suppose the support of this alliance--and the attitudes that led Cardassia into this situation to be unanimous. But there is more to the Cardassian people than most outsiders have ever suspected.

And in the wary eyes of the Cardassians, there is more to the Federation than most of its own citizens have ever suspected. Will the Cardassian Union's darkest hour eventually lead to its finest hour?

Explore this question through the eyes of the Cardassians themselves, and those in the Federation with whom they cross paths.
