Oooh, a behind the scenes type fic. :D This is great to see what the characters are thinking.

I particularly liked Spock's musings at the end. The line where he describes McCoy as his devil's advocate was so Spock, I could almost hear him saying the words.

And the boys! I wanted to join them! I had some serious wistfulness regarding childhood and this time it was accompanied with me assessing the;r mum on her parenting technique (I am so changed now I have my own little girl). Some great stuff.

Thanks so much for writing and elaborating on your story and sharing it with us all.

Author's Response: Thanks, Nutty! Thanks for asking me questions about PG that I just had to answer. I had a lot of fun writing the Kirk boys childhood misadventures - conjured up memories of my own childhood, and made me paranoid thinking about what my kids have done unbeknownst to me LOL! Again, thanks for the kind words about Spock sounding true to character - I'm always nervous about that. Your support is an inspiration - and I am plugging away on the story for Anna's challenge - hopefully something will come of it. ;-) G'day to you! Cuppy

I get the feeling I'm skimming over the surface of a vast universe I have yet to delve into. I've seen many a post on your journal about Corry and Scotty, but haven't yet read any of your Arc of the Wolf (mostly because I'm into Kirk more than Scotty and I'm a slacker, but you've known me long enough to know the latter :D) However, each time you've posted, I've wondered exactly what all those fics were about.

Well, today I read my first one. God, you know how to characterise :D I don't know Corry and I hardly know Scotty, but the two of them leapt off the page and slapped me silly. This is obviously a little fic in a big universe and only the smallest of windows into it, but your characterisation was vivid

I will be reading more of your universe (got a starting point you could throw me at?) and you'll turn me into a Scotty fan yet :D Thanks so much for writing and sharing...though I have to ask...where on Earth do you get the time to write and maintain the board and archive? You is amazing.

Nutty
(who needs to start managing her time much better)

Author's Response: Heya Nutty -- thank you. Yeah, the Arc of the Wolf is huge; as of last count, over 200,000 words, between myself and a few others have chipped in on it. But generally, not all of the fics are too long; On the Nature of Wind is the longest. The best place to start is at the beginning with the set called Distant Horizons: http://adastra.shadowknightonline.com/viewseries.php?seriesid=9 Better still is that 'Wait' even has a little Spock and McCoy in it. ;-)

LOL! I don't really know how I get time. I guess it helps that I work from home, and only part time, though. Most of the time was spent in setting it up; after that, it's all about maintaining, and that's always easier. Plus, I have good help -- Teddog and Mike are there if I can't be.

Thanks again! Faithful wasn't one of my favorites, but its grown on me since then. I really hope you enjoy the other ones, as well.

A lovely bit of banter. I could just see the two of them mock swiping each other across the head. A real sense of brotherhood.

Thanks so much for writing and sharing.

Nutty
(who got halfway through this last night and got interrupted by a little girl, before I could finish)

Author's Response: I do love it! I never expected, when I started ONOW, to end up writing a whole story arc. And I never expected a character I created to be a one-off POV to decide to stick around, much to my own shock. So, a whole lot of all this writing has been as much of a ride for me, I guess, as them; I know canon, so I know how Scott ends up, but the journey is pretty amazing. And after awhile, I gave up any pretense that Corry's not some part of it, and often, at the center of it too -- he refused to leave anyway. They're good natural counterweights for each other, and I guess somehow they must have both needed it. Thanks much for the comment! And give the little girl a kiss for me on her beautiful head. :D

Oh, that was a great deal of fun :D And you had some great decriptive lines in there. An 'explosion of puss' had me ewwing out loud. It certainly communicates what it needs too ::grin::

I also found myself giggling alot. Kirk's face first dive off the transporter platform was hilarious. And the image of Jim Kirk arm in arm with his first officer, tottering down the corridor was highly amusing. Poor Spock...you had to make Jim vomit all over the poor man's shoes, didn't you :D And I'm sure the Jim Kirk version of Beyond Antares was just as pleasant for our poor Vulcan. And people say I'm mean to my characters, but look at this ::giggle::

Thanks so much for the smiles and giggles. This was a fun ride, thanks for letting me join you in it.

Author's Response: It's funny - I posted this, headed over to the forums, and saw your request for stories centering around Kirk, with Spock and McCoy, in either a h/c or humor genre. I had to laugh! Hopefully, this fit the bill? It was loads of fun to write, and was actually inspired by a TOS blooper reel on youtube where Shatner can be heard giggling...like a girl! I thought it'd be neat to find a reason for Jim to laugh that way...and voila! Anna's challenge gave me the excuse I needed. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-D And as for New Voyages - they are terrific, aren't they? Yep, I have originals, bought 'em new...*sigh* my age is showing ;-)

I have to say that you have the character voices down perfectly. I can hear them in my head...and it has been quite some time since I watched Enterprise.

Also, an interesting discussion between the two of them, showing sides that both may not normally be willing to display. And you played it well with both of them to get them saying what you wanted them to say.

When I first read your challenge I have to admit I was scratching my head. Now that I've written the story I'm seeing 'Not an Island' story ideas popping up everywhere. 'Children of Time' is positively rife with them, and I suggest it as a starting point for other authors.

Nicely written :D You had me wanting to pounce on the faerie prince :D

Oddly enough I had an experience in RL similar to this, though far from as beautifully dramatic. The moment I first met the man who was going to become my husband, I knew I was going to marry him. I scoffed at the thought at the time, I was still in school and he has nearly eight years on my age. But I did, approximately 15 years later. Very muchly of the weird. So I can empathise with this story :D

I saw everything clearly in my head when reading this, could even feel the breeze that was blowing. Nicely done.

God, you write good Jim Kirk. Excellent use of the challenge. I certainly wish I had thought of it :D

You've done a fantastic job of illustrating a Jim Kirk who has been shaken to his foundations. You have him uncharacteristically questioning himself and unsure, but for a damn good reason. I have always wondered about the aftermath of that episode. It's not every man who gets his dirty laundry flung out for all to see.

I particularly like how you gave him his derivative's memories. That would be very difficult to live with and is something that makes a great deal of sense. After all they are one and the same man.

Good explanation about the shuttlecraft.

I love your description of Spock and how he stood by his captain. A nice picture of early Kirk and Spock friendship - very well done.

Thank you for a lovely read.

Nutty
(working out of hours, cos otherwise she is not going to get all her work done)

Author's Response:

::bows::

Thank you, Nutty!  What makes Jim Kirk tick is a question that could have been dealt with a lot more in TOS, and would have so enriched the character.  There are those in fandom who don't care much for him because all they see is the 'swaggering, overbearing, tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood', and yet his conflicted nature was alluded to in several episodes (two of which I've already written about)

As I mentioned in my response to Nerys, I think all great leaders deal somewhat with this question.  Oft times they are forced to make decisions that go against their nature or their beliefs, but they do it because it's what's needed at the time to promote what they see as the greater good.  Having done this, one would hope they'd have enough of a conscience to at least feel some remorse for their actions, but that must be tempered with a quiet resolve to recognize and accept why that choice was made, otherwise they couldn't continue to function effectively.

That's the lesson I wanted to show Jim Kirk coming to grips with here.  Hopefully, I accomplished that...

This was really interesting. An example of great characterisation too. There was sadness that Pike was not aware of and it also seems that AOS Spock is much more assured of himself than TOS Spock was in his youth. I was wondering just yesterday if TOS Spock would have told the Science Academy to go jump quite the way that AOS Spock did. I don't see why not, as the timeline shouldn't have altered that much, but having read this, I'm wondering all the more. TOS Spock seemed much less confident as a Lieutenant in 'The Cage'.

Thanks for a good read and an interesting perspective. Thanks for writing and sharing.

Nutty
(at work, at lunch)

Author's Response: I also think a major difference between young AOS Spock and young TOS Spock is that his emotions in general are much closer to the surface. As you noted, him telling the Science Academy off is a good example, plus the general PO'dness he had every time he had an interaction with Kirk. Perhaps the "irritation" is how he channeled the uncertainty and lack of confidence we saw around "The Cage" era. I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

Wow. For some reason I found this a little chilling. Probably the foreshadowing of tragedy.

Well written and paced, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I particularly liked the mention of Tarsus. I think this is an area of Jim Kirk's life that could do with a little more exploring in relation to how it sculpted him into the man he is now (and in AOS how that event's absence changed the character, cos I doubt it happened there).

It was also good to see Sam getting a little air time.

Oh, my god, this is a beautiful piece of work. You had me laughing and crying, grinning and smirking. A wonderful piece of writing...and yes, I nearly said beautfiful again as that is the word that is sticking in my mind.

This is labelled a tragedy, but I'd like to relabel it as a celebration of friendship and a couple of lives that were lived to the fullest.

Your McCoy voice is brilliant. It wandered all over the topic so in character I was grinning. And his turn of phrase is just wonderful. And yes, I'm running out of synonyms for beautiful and wonderful.

I have to run off now as I'm at work, but please know that if I had time right now, I'd blabber at you some more as to how I thoroughly enjoyed this.

You are a fantastic writer. I wanna see more!

Thanks heaps for writing and sharing.

It took me a moment at the beginning to place the events, but once I realised who and when I couldn't help but smile.

An interesting take on those TOS characters that made it into TNG. Most think of Spock first in relation to Jim in TNG time, but I'd forgotten about Scotty and how he would react with the news. This is a great take on what he might have done.

Nice little fic. Thanks for sharing.

Author's Response: Thank you-that was my whole impetus. Kirk had more than one friend. People forget that.

Oooh, I like this. It certainly shows an effect that might not have been considered.

I also like how you've sketched out how Jim Kirk the legend lives on and how the pain in his eyes was basically a man dying a death of a thousand cuts.

Very nicely written and an enjoyable read.

This is only the second fic I've read in ST:AOS (I'm a long term ST:TOS fan though). A nice introduction for me :D

It would certainly be an interesting meeting between the two captains, and I like your interpretation...though I'm worried where you've sent the poor man :D I also like the focus on the Spock/Uhura relationship and how Spock reflexively puished her away somewhat while grieving - good character point.

Thanks for writing and sharing.

Author's Response: Thanks. In a kinda-sorta way, you can meet the man the reflected Kirk-amalgam became in 'Down Through The Circles' a part of The Ancient Destroyer Cycle, but its a series unto itself, so you can decide. I also wanted to repair the K&U relationship (though for all I know 12 will start with it still icy) and I'm glad this worked for you. Thanks!
