Wrong.

Very nice, early days Spock vignette.

Terrific concept and story, really enjoyed this quite a bit. Gender bender isn't usually my fare and neither is canon Trek to be honest but this got me hooked pretty much straight away. Making Kirk and Gary a captain/first officer pairing, and then adding an unwanted, forced pregnancy into the mix was absolutely brilliant. As was Jane's voice throughout this story.

Many women have surely been in these kind of unfortunate situations but thanks to Trek, you added a unique spin to this tale which gives this story another dimension in which there is no real villain other than the situation in which Kirk finds herself.

Excellent work.

Summary: In 2413 the United Federation of Planets and its allies are once again at war. Exploration is on the back-burner as Starfleet concentrates on defending the Federation’s heart from a blood-thirsty and violent species from the Gamma Quadrant as well as a growing threat from a well-organized militia trying to disrupt a Romulan-Reman accord.

Now odd occurrences at its back door begin to cause the UFP alarm, right on the eve of the budding peace initiative in the region. Something or someone is murdering supply ship commanders near the remote and normally calm edges of the Romulan Neutral Zone. The only eye-witness accounts describe the attackers as being ghosts.

Fresh off her fiery stint as the captain of a small Starfleet defense ship, the newly ordained commanding officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-G, along with a tenacious band of defense ship commanders, are burdened with a task that will either bring peace to the region or will let the enemy run unabated through the galaxy, destroying everything the UFP holds dear…

…and really, what would that do to the family name?

Well, that was an interesting way to handle Q. A long way from how Picard, Sisko and Janeway dealt with his meddling.
It helps, of course, that they are already so accustomed to each other. This is going to make for a very unique relationship.

Author's Response: *Smile* The relationship between Beth and Q is MUCH different from the relationship between Q and her elders. It's touched upon several times in this book. Hope you're enjoying so far. Thank you for reading and commenting!

Just started to read this and I like it quite a bit so far.

Usually I'm not much for 'future' story-lines but the writing here is so crisp and the characters so interesting that this has drawn me right in.

You've clearly created quite a detailed history of your new future complete with dangerous new enemies and a much more diverse Federation.

I especially like Beth so far. And the other crew members also sound quite interesting with plenty of potential for conflict.

Looking forward to explore more of this bold new future.

Author's Response: Cejay! Thanks so much. This is a HUGE project...I promise you it's worth taking your time with. :)

A lot of back-story in this chapter but it turns out it's all incredibly relevant.

Beth's revelation is world shaking for her parents. She's basically been hiding a serious disability from them for all her life.

It be interesting to see how she manages to perform her duties as a starship captain with such a potentially distracting handicap.

Also interesting, as far as I can remember Deanna wasn't much for telepathic communications herself when she was on the Enterprise-D. Clearly that has changed.

Author's Response: Deanna has empathic children. I think I mention that Deanna recalled being put off by Lwaxana's own preference to speak telepathically so Deanna's much more patient...she's also much older. The episode "Menage a Troi" is one where I base Deanna's increased comfort level with her own Betazoid skills...she saw Beth's rejection of those abilities as more than just being annoyed - she saw them as a rejection of her own heritage...something Deanna herself had to overcome really. Not the least of which...Cassidy was born without the ability - so for Beth to reject them was difficult for Deanna. Bill however - he has no issues with it. At all. :) You will see that there is an AWFUL LOT of backstory in this book...but it's also serving as the jumping off point for three more books - hence the need for the detail and the history. I can't thank you enough for reading!

Was doing some research on my own Pava story and came across this little tale which I must have missed the first time around.

Great stuff. I love it when the Federation, through the SMT's and the most dangerous El Aurian this side of the Milky Way, takes its gloves off to deal out some very effective punishment against its enemies.

Very well done.

Author's Response:

Yeah, this is definitely not your father's Federation anymore.  Especially with President Satie's more hands-off approach to foreign relations, there's now a heavier reliance on Special Operations missions when the Federation wants to get a point across or stop an enemy cold in their tracks.

Thanks for the review!

I really like this short glimpse at characters that could have made a real impact on the show had they been allowed to live. Stadi was not only a looker, she could have been a terrific foil to the young and swashbuckling Tom Paris and a rivalry between the two could have made for some interesting story potential. And and of course an emotional Vulcan would have been story telling gold.

You fleshed out these minor characters so well here, it makes their demise twice as tragic and I find myself wishing we'd had a chance to get to know them even more.

Great stuff.

About time this gets another chapter.

The battle is afoot and for a brief moment it looked as if Gibraltar & friends would have an easy victory for once. Then the universe remembered the absurdity of such an idea and promptly changed the odds.

And look at Sandhurst flexing his rarely used diplomatic muscles. To everyone's surprise, the sly fox has already hammered out half of a deal to ensure an independent Maquis state. Now the question is, will the Federation play ball, too.

And then there is Pava and the SMT's. They were a bit heavy on the catch phrases and pre-mission rituals here for my tastes but you can't argue with their effectiveness.

Outstanding, as always.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review, CeJay!  Yeah, the SMT's are full of machismo swagger, but that comes with the territory in their line of work.  As for Sandhurst, he's playing things pretty close to the vest here, but given that this is him... things could conceivably unravel and go sideways any second.

OK, Pava clearly is in a bad place right now. I mean ... worse place. Never knew the guy had a death wish, but seeing what he's been through, here, and generally, I can understand.

And while I was never Ariel's greatest fan, I'm sorry to see her go out like this. The only consolation is that this happens years after her Farragut adventures and therefore, hopefully, we get to see her pop up again.

When are people gonna learn? When you want to live, stay far, far away from Gibraltar and her crew. Unless your name is Pava Lar'ragos. He's pretty much screwed either way.

Author's Response:

Pava's in a bad place, yes, but then again he has been for a while now.  He's at a turning point, but which direction will he choose to go?

Thaniks for the review!

I'm tempted to say that Sandhurst might have missed his calling. The guy should have been a diplomat. I had no idea he was such a prudent negotiator. But I guess selling his Maquis-state plan to Kincaid and Diaz was just the easy part. Selling this to Command, the Federation and the Cardassians, now that's going to take some serious lobbying.

In the meantime we learn the full extent of Galmesh's surprisingly cunning plan. Or maybe not so surprisingly cunning considering that he's working hand in hand with a Romulan, of all people. Love the irony that she is his lover and enemy. That's poetic.

I didn't agree with T'Ser's call however to keep the Gallant back when Galmesh attacked. It felt a little bit like tempting fate. We're talking about Gibraltar after all, with this ship you never want to take any chances. I'm sure T'Ser will learn.

Terrific chapter but I do get frustrated that every other installment of yours includes a couple of words I've never heard before. A learning experience, I guess.

A fantastic story so far and a lot of things to like.

Gibraltar gets to team up with some real muscle for a change. Something tells me it won't be quite enough to keep them out of real trouble.

Kincaid as a Maquis leader was a real surprise. Of all of Farragut's crew, he would have been the last I'd expected to join our favorite terrorist cell. But then again I never saw Eddington coming either.

And it looks like Gibraltar and company are going to get help from an old friend. I'm curious to see how Sandhurst will react to this unexpected reunion.

Another fantastic chapter.

You gotta love seeing Starfleet going on the offensive for once. Not something you see every day. And these guys appear to be serious. God help the Maquis.

I really liked Diaz here unable to delude herself about the changed nature of the Maquis any longer. But still, it's hard to believe that she's lost all her loyalties to her former organization. We'll see.

As for Ebnal; he's something else alright.

Ordinarily I would say that it looks like as if the Maquis are finished, their colonies dismantled, their very homes gone, their forces no match for Starfleet's resolve.

Ordinarily I might sit back and enjoy Gibraltar kicking some butt for once without the usual and painful sacrifices.

But this is Gibraltar, we're talking about. So no matter how good things look right now, I know it won’t last. Looks like Galmesh will make sure of that.

Excellent stuff though. I'm totally hooked.

Another terrific chapter all around.

The battle between Amberjack and the Maquis was tightly written and exciting to read ... well at least until it was clear that they were all going to die. At that point it just became kinda heartbreaking.

But they will not have died in vain as now the 'gloves are coming off'.

Loved the Sandhurst/Pava encounter. Looks like Donald isn't quite ready to make nice with our favorite El Aurian but hopefully that's going to be a temporary rift.

Sandhurst meeting Kircheis was fascinating also. I'm growing quite fond of the young captain of the Gallant. Sandhurst shows an almost fatherly concern here as he already predicts another emotionally distressing enconter with the enemy. This guy needs a break like Ariel Elannis needs a celibacy pledge

I appreciate a story from the viewpoints of the not so glamorous Starfleet officers, the foot soldiers, the small cogs who are nevertheless essential to keep the machine running smoothly.

The protagonist was likeable and the antagonist inconspicuous at first. I was perhaps a bit surprised to see this set in an alternate universe as it could have fit very well in the proper one as well.

The ending was surprisingly dark and not what you'd hope for.

A great little story that begs for some form of continuation at some point.
