Reposting from elsewhere:
At the risk of being accused of blasphemy, I still maintain that James Kirk is one most commonly mistreated character in fanfiction. For some reason, everyone seems convinced that they know him. In point of fact, hardly anyone does. Hardly anyone bothers to look beneath the surface and at least acknowledge that he’s a very complicated character, certainly not simply a power-obsessed womanizer, blind and deaf to the needs of others, as he appears in many stories. That is why I find it absolutely smashing that you show such remarkable will to dig deeper, to really know what makes him tick. This story is incredibly insightful and realistic, and very true to Jim. Thank you for sharing this.
Author's Response: Thank you,Anna. I was worried that people would find this Jim Kirk too insecure and unsure, but I believe that's a large part of his character - he's just become an expert at hiding it. ;-) And thanks again for the inspiration. Our discussions of the morality issues in chapter 23 of AH led directly to this story. Who'da thunk it?!

God. I don't remember where was the first time I read this story, and if I commented or not. But I love it. I really have no other words. The poignant nature of it, the fragile balance of this scpecial relationship that you write so well, it just gets me every time. But I think the most touching thing here is Jim's naive egoism. He only knows when he hurts, not when he hurts others. Spock nails him with his reply beautifully. And very truthfully, there is no resolution.
Masterful dialogue. Great story.
Author's Response: Oh wow, thank you for such wonderful feedback :D I checked back over at FF.net and you have commented there :D and had also said that you saw it somewhere else...I seem to be posting in multiple places (my journal, FF.net and TOSfic were the main ones) and I think it is because I have a home for all my other fandom fics, but haven't yet quite found a spot for my Trek fics where I can play in the community and get to really know other TOS writers. I think TOSfic was good for a while, but then it faded somewhat and I drift from fandom to fandom...and now I'm babbling...maybe I'll find a home here :D
Anyways, thanks so much for reading and commenting, you feed my pen.

Okay. There will be a conclusion finally, right? I must say, you have a unique style indeed, unlike anything I've read before in fandom or elsewhere. And this story is simply like a torture chamber, with its dramatic falls and rises and with the fight for every breath. There's hardly a moment to take a break, which is wonderful. The upbuild of tension is simply unprecedented. And it's all the more impressive when you realize that the language doesn't take you on any unnecessary detours, but brings you straight to the point. It is a perfect thriller, at times turning into a horror show. I enjoyed reading this immensely, and I only have one big favor to ask: Please finish. Don't leave us here, it's unbearable. ::grins:: At least, try to make it within this lifetime? ;-)
Author's Response: Oh, wow, thanks so much for such lovely compliments. I do hope to keep the pieces coming for this one, there is so much planned in my head for down the track that I'd be highly annoyed if I didn't finish it eventually. Thanks so much for reading, you feed my pen. Nutty
(supposedly awake, yet yawning)

The USS Kestrel, an aging Miranda class, serving as part of the Border Service has the thankless task of patrolling some of the murkier corners of the Federation. As the seat of Federation power in a dangerous and wild region of space, the Kestrel acts to paraphrase her firebrand captain, Captain Gregory McGregor, as the rule and the law, the line in the sand, the first and last line of defense for the Federation.
"So we can't be calling in the cavalry at the drop of a hat. We are the cavalry. We stand the line, we duke it out, we shout them down, we clean their windscreens, and we set out the welcome mat. It's not all bad you know."
This is the first story featuring the ramshackle, rough and ready crew of the Kestrel. I'd call them an unorthodox crew but hey isn't every crew unorthodox in their own way!
Led by the acerbic, sarcastic, bombastic, over the top, pain-in-the-ass, coarse and unprofessional Captain Gregory McGregor. Just the type of behaviour to get stuff on the border done! There's no time for Jean-Luc's niceties here!
The Border Dogs might be seen as the ‘poor cousins' of the Fleet and the Miranda might be seen as the ‘Ford pick-up of Starfleet' but the Kestrel in the humble opinion of her Captain shows the Fleeters how to do things the proper way.

Ooooh, an ominous bad guy right at the chapter's end! I wonder what McGregor had done to him, though from the looks of it, he's the type to be capable of about anything. ;-)
Is it bad that the exchange between the Commander and the Commodore made me laugh? I can just *see* the scene with the tool kit... LOL.
On to the next chapter...
Author's Response:
Cool. Love that you could imagine it. And I hope it isn't bad that the exchange made you laugh cos it's what I did too.
Date: 25 May 2009 Title: Chapter 2: 'But It's a Miranda Class!'
"I know my parents were cruel and I was teased something awful as a child. Thankfully, it didn't affect me in the slightest and I remain a well adjusted, rational being." ::dies:: Can I adopt this phrase for real life? LOL! Oh, I love this guy already. ::wicked grin:: He sounds like fun. ;-)
Author's Response:
Of course adopt it! McGregor is sadly a misjudged buddha, a fountain of wisdom and knowledge, if people but understood, they could all live theri lives better by following his example. :) Thanks again, Anna.
Date: 26 May 2009 Title: Chapter 4: 'Problems in Engineering'
I gotta say, I like the feel of this ship. Meaning it's very real. Somehow, the atmosphere just gets to you, the confusion of the newbies, the wicked (but not unkind) humor of the oldies. LOL. It's got all kinds of promises. ;-)
Author's Response:
Aw mega thanks Anna. Very much what I was trying to go for. Good to know I achieved it with at least one reader. And again thank you so much for reading.
Date: 17 Jun 2009 Title: Chapter 5: Hanging About
LOL! I have one thing to say for this captain, if his crew doesn't go crazy trying to figure him out, they'll end up thinking as 'out-of-the-box' as it gets. :D
Author's Response:
Have a feeling they'll end up going crazy - that is if he doesn't kill them first! LOL
Date: 17 Jun 2009 Title: Chapter 6: 'Bedding In'
::giggles:: He sold his counselor? I wish Picard would have thought of that. :D
Author's Response:
Oh that's very wicked Anna! ;) But yup! McGregor is not the touchy feely type!
Date: 17 Jun 2009 Title: Chapter 7: 'A Message Home'
'Find myself. Be myself. Run from myself.' Best line ever. An apt summation of options any graduate faces after entering the real world.
A sweet and touching chapter. ;-)
Author's Response:
Thanks Anna. Poor little Noah seems very afloat in the midst of all this. So who else can he but call but his Mam!
Date: 17 Jun 2009 Title: Chapter 8: 'An Admiring Admiral'
Wow. Well. Ahem. LOL. So much for coherency. ;-) A dramatic development here. A very consistent outline you draw here for Sebastian, no wonder he reacts so defensively. Great characterization!
Author's Response:
Thanks again Anna. Bad boy Sebastian has a certain appeal I just hope I can do his story justice.
Date: 17 Jun 2009 Title: Chapter 9: 'A VIP Event'
Well, that chapter was a maelstrom! Assuming I spelled that right. Well, anyway. Is it bad of me that my sympathies are with Templar so far? And the one of a kind alien, now, that's really twisting the intrigue!
Author's Response:
Heck no, sympathise with him by all means. Depends of course on where his story goes as to whether that was the right choice to make or not. ;)
As for 'our one of a kind' Stan the Man, I'm glad you're liking the mystery.
Date: 18 Jun 2009 Title: Chapter 10: 'A Commanding Presence'
Cool! Leave a kid at the conn and see what happens. :D
Author's Response:
Nothing bad, I assure you. Would I lie?
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 11: 'Boarding Party'
Whoa. So the conversation of the security guards lulled me completely, and their swift end was like a kick in the gut. Nice move! Writing-wise I mean. LOL.
This is getting gritty. :;shivers:: Somehow, I don't sympathize with Harris very much, but Noah is another matter. I hope he'll make it through in one piece. ::muses::
Author's Response:
Cool thanks Anna. Kinda wanted their end to be a gut punch to get across the violence of the attack and the intent of the attackers. So waaaaaaaaaaaaay pleased that you liked. And yes, it takes a gritty turn here for a bit. Heehee.
Glad you're rooting for Noah, because somebody needs to ;)
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 12: 'Party Crashers'
Yeah, I'm with the yeoman or whoever said that. "What the...?" Being a lady, I won't finish the quote. LOL. Besides, I have some vague idea.
Hm. Gritty.
Author's Response:
And what a lady you are, Anna. Big thanks for the review.
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 13: 'A Hostile Environment'
Whoa, whoa! Can't decide if it's a perfect thriller or a cool action movie. I mean story. LOL. It's just that visualization comes so easily while reading this.
Jex seems to be my favorite for the moment. I wonder what comes next...;-)
Author's Response:
I love following how the characters go up and down in your estimation Anna. It's a read in tiself for me. LOL. Love it. And love the reviews. Thanks millions! Especially when you say nice things like the bisualisation comes easy. It comes easy to me too but that's cos it is in my head and I desperately hope it gets across in some fashion to the readers. So thanks very much for words that are way too kind.
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 14: 'Destructive Behaviour'
Okay, that's official. I'm in love with McGregor. :D ::dies at the Vulcan improvisation:: The last time I laughed so hard was when someone suggested it shoud be 'Live long and prosper... bitch'. :D I hope Noah doesn't faint, or he'll miss all the fun. Loved Molly's response -- LMAO!! But the captain simply the best. ::huge smirk:: Terrific writing. :D
Author's Response:
Blush! Blush! And more blush! You're too kind Anna. But thank you sooooo much. McGregor just has a mouth that's liable to come out with anything so it rocks to write him. But of course, we'll see how long you love McGregor for. A bit coming up might soon change your mind.
And yeah, Molly's response is to love but then what else would one say?! LOL. Thanks again.
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 15: 'VIP - MIA'
This is getting better and better! Love Molly!
Author's Response:
I love Molly too. And I love you for reviewing and saying nice things. Blush again.
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 16: 'Controlled Chaos'
That is a kind of a cliffhanger for which people get killed. Just a kindly friendly observation... For now. ;-)
Author's Response:
LOL! Anna, I have to keep you hooked and wanting to come back for more. Please keep it kind and friendly as I think I'd fear crossing you more than McGregor! ;)
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 17: 'Countdown to Oblivion'
Okay, I changed my mind, thriller turned almost to a horror. (And I like horrors!) Also, I've never known another author who'd be as sadistic. Not only did you created one hell of a cliffhanger back there, now you prolong it! Grrrr. I wonder if the pieces are going to lead to a real team work. Hmm... Well done!
Author's Response:
Coolio. And yeah what's a cliffhanger if it doesn't keep you hanging for a bit. As for team work ...
Date: 14 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 18: 'Into the Maelstrom'
I think this man needs to be held in federal prison and released on special occasions. LOL. Wow! He's a bloody hurricane and beats me how Starfleet puts up with him, but he's got style. Whew! Head-spinning read!
Author's Response:
Yes McGregor is a bit like a hurricane - full of wind and VERY destructive! HA! Glad your liking [and reviewing too -aw love you Anna]. Yep it is a mystery as to why Starfleet continues to put up with McGregor. They must have a reason ... ::looks about suspiciously:: ... and I think it's only too important that a captain has style. After all, they do have Kirk to try and live up to!
Date: 15 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 19: 'A Let Down'
I think I'm out of love with McGregor. Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, but why exactly was he bitch slapping the kid? So he was on the bridge, and? Out of curiosity, just what was he supposed to do? ::dongetit::
Little Baloon story kept me waiting for one of the baloons to explode. :D
Author's Response:
And here comes the turning point for many when it comes to McGregor. Ha! I guess, I'll have to do something to make you fall back in love with him again. Only thing is, McGregor is as like to follow it up with something to make you fall out of love with him again. Hee! He's a love him or - no actually - and hate him kinda guy.
And no, Noah had very few options available to him and his being bitch slapped by McGregor was perhaps unwarranted. Though McGregor himself in Kirkian school of thought that there is no no-win situation and could have come up with something! But McGregor probably really places blame and ager at T'Hos, but not having him to hand, he has to take it out on someone. Petty I know but hey it's not as if McGregor is dripping with positive points to begin. Still he wrapped it up in a cute little story. Not all bad. Exploding balloons! Anna! How shocking tarra, of you.
Date: 15 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 20: 'Accommodating Commodore'
Yay Molly! That woman knows her shit, not to mention her captain. Very quick thinking at that. Not to mention manners. :D The threat of McGregor hanging around for months was a master's touch. LOL.
Author's Response:
Yay Molly, I ful-heartedly concur. After these years, she knows her captain alright. To full eye-rolling hilt knows him! But yeah, using McGregor hanging around as a threat would be the first thing to try and motivate a person like the commodore.
Date: 15 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 21: 'Taking Stock of the Heart' [A Frontier Girl]
Well, that was... harsh. Hm. Many psychological issues here. First of, I'm glad someone's talking some sense into Cutler. He's damn insecure and McGregor's lecture back there didn't help. Hm. Good point on Monroe's part.
Then Monroe herself. Well, that's a case of classic gender bending there, with her and Jocum. And masterfully done, too. You can feel her being reluctant to hurt him and yet being unable to give up her chosen way of life. What's particularly good about it is that you can understand them both here and sympathize with both. Good work!
Author's Response:
Thanks Anna. Glad it worked and that both parties could be sympathised with. And one can only hope that the chat works with Noah, but it will probably take a little more than that to sink in with him.
Date: 15 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 22: 'Taking Stock of the Truth' [A Rogue's Confession]
Yeah, the mystery of some marriages will probably never be disclosed. This guy sounds like as real a son of a bitch as they get. Wow. What an asshole. Him. McGregor. T'Hos. Georgetown. God, Molly must be a saint. Damn hot one at that, but still. Whew!
Author's Response:
Defo, Molly is a saint or at the very least a martyr! And I like that you think she's hot. Cos she rocks in my estimation.
Date: 15 Jul 2009 Title: Chapter 23: 'Taking Stock with Expediency' [A Captain's Prerogative]
Hm. I wonder what he's up to now. Curious man. Mad. But curious. ;-)
Author's Response:
Curious - hmm - that probably does equate with McGregor. But of course, mad too!
