Okay-again-these three are just amazing. Just for the record, I want to state once more how awesome all three of these characters are. I loved this-especially JQs take on "Admiral Fucking Janeway" I love his use of the f-bomb and if the TV gods decide to put Star Trek back on the small screen, I kind of they'll use JQ in it and have him drop the f-bomb every once in awhile, just to remind the audience that humanity is still a very relatable thing in the 24th century.
At any rate, loved this, love JQs narration, and I fully approve of any future "JQ Logs" if you decide to write them.

I am so glad you enjoyed this look back at the trio during their academy years. I'd like to write more of that story (and have a bunch on my hard drive), but I've got to get Tesseract done first! Also glad that you liked the JQ POV -- for someone who is such an I/M shipper, you seem to be taking a liking to JQ lately! ;-)

Great story. And we have all been there - overwhelmed by feelings of anger when someone we love is threatened or ridiculed. I'm not at all familiar with the Voyager series - the only name I recognized is Janeway - but the personalities of Icheb and J.Q. are perfect foils to one another. I loved the bit about Icheb finding other ways than punching someone in the face to mete out punishment. Showed that the tormenting did bother him, but he was able to channel those feelings in a different direction.
Also loved that while J.Q. was willing to risk his career to defend his friends, Icheb was willing to cash in favors - something he is very reluctant to do - on behalf of his friend. Excellent fit for this challenge. :D

Thanks for the very nice review, Lil black dog. Icheb was one of the Borg children rescued from a damaged cube during season 6 of Voyager. He wanted to attend Starfleet Academy. My series picks up with him again eight years later, after he's graduated and been assigned to the mission back to the Delta Quadrant. It's got a mix of canon characters and OCs, of which J.Q. is one. This piece was obviously a look back to their Academy years, though. I loved your analysis of this -- it was spot on. :) Thanks again!

Oops, wrong TV franchise. It's an interesting story of character development "before they were stars" and a pivotal point where a person decides they absolutely have to clean up their act.

What I like about JQ or as I like to call him now, the Perpetual Third Wheel, is that he actually stands up and fights for the woman he loves. Well at least when her honor is threatened. I do (kinda) like Icheb but I've never seen him do that for his girl. Maybe I'll start a JQ + Maren fan club on Facebook ...

CeJay, OMG! I laughed so hard at the thought of a JQ/Maren shipper club on FB. That would be so awesome.
I will say this -- you're right, Icheb has never gotten into a fist fight over Maren (Yet ... hehe.). He's stood up for her, but not in the impulsive, instinctive, um, violent kind of way that JQ has. That said, he'd almost certainly kill or die to protect her from real physical harm (i.e. something a little more serious than hurt feelings or threatened honor). He also, in his weird way, sacrificed a lot to try and protect her from the emotional trauma of his condition. It didn't work, but that's beside the point --he did try. But the bottom line is, he's not human, he thinks very differently in many ways, and these are the areas where it shows.
All right, there ends my obligatory defense of Icheb. I like JQ, too, and I'm serious when I say I flip back and forth between shipping the two pairings even though I'm the one writing them.
Anyway, I'm glad you liked the story, or at least found it cute. Thanks for the review.

Okay... that was just downright sweet. No other way to describe it. I like the fact that John has finally realized what he needs to do in order to reach his goal, by reigning in his emotional responses. Now that Icheb has gone to the wall to salvage J.Q.'s Starfleet career, John can't fly off the handle anymore. There's too much at stake, and other people's honor on the line, including Icheb and Admiral Janeway.
Your vignettes have a wonderful ability to pull back the covers on whole chapters of a character's life and personality in remarkably few words.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Gibraltar. You're right in that Icheb saved John in more ways than one, here -- it wasn't just the literal getting him saved from expulsion. Whether Icheb fully realized he was doing this or not, he was forging an emotional bond with John that would actually make a difference in the way John approached things from that point forward. Because, as you say, other people's honor was now on the line -- not just his -- and JQ wouldn't ever want to let down the people who put their reputation on the line for him to give him another chance.
Even by the time Tesseract is taking place, John's not all the way there yet with his emotional control, obviously -- nor, quite frankly, will he probably ever be. He's a guy who feels things pretty deeply. It's just who he is. But he's trying hard .... Thanks so much for the review.

Ok. Firstly, I love the JQ pov. It seems very fitting to tell this particular piece of what I shall call Tesseract lore. We learn about JQ's previous liking for Maren pre-Icheb and how he had warred with a certain degree of jealousy before he and icheb became reluctant friends it seems or friends by accidents to be more accurate. And it strikes that John maybe didn't fully appreciate how much of a friend he was to Icheb until this moment. Which makes this a very special moment [to me] for their friendship - it is like the moment of confirmation or cementing of their friendship.
It was also interesting to read about the dynamics between the triangle before the Triangle and Tesseract. John as always strikes as a real stand up guy - the fact that he literally stands up for Icheb and Maren is really impressive. Of course, we see doing so has gotten him into trouble at the Academy and only by the grace of Icheb using friends in high places to bail him out.
The title too is fitting - Janeway intervenes for John on Icheb's behalf; John intervened to protect Icheb and Maren. It is all zen. LOL.
Loved John's line: Admiral Fucking Janeway! LOL! Love it. And of course, loved seeing Janeway chewing ass and being all Janeway.
A very fitting entry to the Friendship challenge too.
Thanks, MF. "Friends by accident" is a good way to describe these two. They probably wouldn't have sought each other out, but their mutual connection to Maren brought them together and slowly but surely, they warmed up to each other. I didn't elaborate as much as I could have on what brought them to this point in their friendship, but maybe that's a story for another day. As for John's potty mouth ... well, it wouldn't be JQ's POV without at least one f-bomb, now would it? ;-) I'm glad you liked this piece. Thanks so much for the kind review.
