This is a nice approach to the story, doing it from both POVs that way. I ache for Kirk, but maybe this woman's simple appreciate can ease some of his pain--he made a lot of mistakes, but he did far more right, including bringing her niece home. This was a poignant look at this moment in Kirk's life, and while painful, also brought a little peace, too.

Author's Response:

As I said in the story notes, I really hadn't intended to do this from Kirk's POV, but once he got hold of the idea he wouldn't let me be until I told his side of the story. ;-)  It really is impossible to say 'no' to that man. ;-)

More awww. Poor Jimmy. That whole admiral thing never did him any good. But it wasn't like he could sign on to another ship without Spock.

The depth of emotion in this is , well, deep :D You've caught Jim really well in one of the darker moments of his life. No one's in danger, no planet needs saving, only perhaps Jim Kirk himself. Spock, what were you thinking????

Nutty
(interrupted breakfast by children)

Author's Response:

More to the point - what were all of them thinking?  ;-)  It's all laid out in the prequel, and sequel. ;-)

I like short tales that leave you wanting more.

And this is one of 'em. So -- what happens next?

Author's Response:

Funny you should ask...the tale continues in 'Shadows and Dust,' and was started in 'Six Degrees of Separation.'  This piece and its companion piece, 'Into the Maelstrom,' act as a bridge for those two longer works.  *I know, I know - shameless plug. ;-)*   Thanks for taking the time to read, and comment - it's greatly appreciated! :D

A truly excellent piece, with more of that ‘melts before your eyes’ narrative that is rapidly becoming your hallmark.

I have it on good authority from Kirk that he is feeling much better now that he managed to get that story off his chest. He made it back safe and sound, by the way, walking all the way to his hotel in the mission district. He is beginning to accept the situation and knows that although he isn’t a captain himself, his experience can increase the chances of others crews not just surviving, not just succeeding, but growing as human beings.

He also said that you shouldn’t wear that life vest any more. You don’t need it.

Seriously lbd, this story rocks.

Sam.

Author's Response:

Wow! Please give me a second to scrape my jaw off the floor, where it definitely landed after reading that!

*chuckles* Good to know Jim Kirk speaks to someone besides myself - I was starting to worry. ;-)

I'm truly humbled by your praise for this piece, Sam, and I find myself at a loss for words to thank you properly for the boost in confidence this has given me. :D
