The sheer feeling and sentimentality of this piece is really captivating. Spock, who of course cannot say a word, and cannot even betray a smidgen of his inner turmoil with a glance or an eyebrow quirk, has to bear all of that. Great insight into the characters, as usual!
Author's Response:
Thank you. Anna's original stirred these feelings in me and I just transferred them to the page, so all laud and honor for this piece go directly to her. I know it's not part of the R&R challenge, but if you haven't read her original you really should, especially if you identify with McCoy as it is told from his POV.

I had to read this again, after I went to Anna's and SK's pieces. I think the best order would be to read Anna's first, then the other two in either order, but this way I got to read yours again!
Author's Response:
I'm so glad you went and read the other two. I'm just humbled and thrilled to be allowed to write in the shadow of these two exceptional authors, for they were the ones who dared me to try writing fan fiction. Two wonderful ladies, indeed!

One of the best aspects of this story is the Spock/McCoy dynamic--Spock's knowledge that they are allies in protecting Jim, and that McCoy won't forgive him for failing to do so this time. You give such weight to that last moment, that last time they will see and be seen by those they care about most--exquisite.
Author's Response:
Again, I really have to give all the credit and praise here to Anna. Without her original masterpiece to inspire me, this story never would have come about. If you haven't already done so, please read her piece, 'Should I Fall Behind.'

...damn. Warn people to get tissues before they read this! Damn.
Author's Response:
I'd love to take credit for it, but all praise must go to Anna's original - this wouldn't have been possible without it. If you haven't done so already, please read 'Should I Fall Behind' by Anna Amuse - this is but a shadow of that masterful piece.

Very nice piece. I have not read the companion by Anna-i will have to track it down...
Author's Response:
Thank you, Mistral. I had an awesome story to work with, so all praise goes to Anna, first for writing such a beautiful piece and second for being gracious enough to allow me to step briefly into the universe she created. :D
