Nice! I know I already reviewed, but I wanted to read it again. Now that I've been watching Enterprise, I like how Spock has come to fit in in the human world without displaying the derision that the Vulcans seemed to show in earlier generations. I'm sure that Captain Pike had much to do with that, and you characterize that well.

What I love about this is how we see the different layers of interaction and how influential and inspirational a figure PIke was. Not only did he help to hone the officer Scotty was to become he also played a part in shaping Spock and helping him to transit into Starfleet as a Vulcan and a scientist and an officer. The fact that Spock is so willing to understand all that he had learned from Pike, even at this early stage, is something that attests to the lessons he has learned and gleaned from Pike.

I really liked this one when I saw it on the TrekBBS, and I still really like it. As someone growing into a management role myself, at work, this is a very important lesson to remember. I've had quite a chance to observe what it's like when someone neglects this (let's just say my boss is the personality model for my Gul Speros, though he will never know it!) and to experience it. That person can be totally, completely right, but if they handle it in an insensitive manner...what incentive is there to take it seriously except maybe a negative one (I'll never give HIM an excuse again! etc.).
It also seems to me that Pike has read How to Win Friends and Influence People. Pike's lesson here is one of the very same ones that Dale Carnegie suggests in that book, when it comes to getting people to accept correction.
Now off the management-technique discussion...I really liked the way you depicted Pike. He really seems like someone worthy of serving under, and it becomes easy to see how Spock could possibly have developed a loyalty to him so intense he put everything on the line to help him.

Author's Response: I always figured that Pike's more formal style wouldn't have just been important to both young lieutenants Spock and Scott, but probably even vital in some ways. Spock because he's still learning how to cope in a mostly-human world. Much later, he's able to serve with Jim Kirk, who is a captain who almost wrestles his command into the ground, rather than maintaining some detachment. And by now, Scott's managed to come to grips with his personal life, and his childhood; if he hadn't done that, of course, he wouldn't have made it here. And if not for Pike's careful mentoring, there can be no doubt he wouldn't have made it to Chief by the time TOS starts. It all flows, and it all makes sense. Thanks so much for the comment!
