You still have some tense issues, but this was a really moving and insightful story. I like how you establish their relationship patterns so quickly, and show that even though they've both grown, they still have issues. I love how you show the destruction of Vulcan affecting him so deeply, and how it all comes down to Jocelyn and Joanna. Good writing, and good insight into the characters. Thank you.

This was a very interesting look into McCoy’s backstory. TOS, or AOS for that matter, never really delved into this area, but to me, it’s an untapped fount of information which can help to offer an explanation for McCoy’s crusty personality, in either universe.
I, too, have always viewed the good doctor’s foray into Starfleet as a way to run from his past; a way to hide from a pain he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) explain or discuss, for clearly, he isn’t a military man, in any sense of the word. ;-). It is a personal pain that he keeps bottled up and securely locked deep within his psyche, only to bubble to the surface along with his volatile, short-fused temper.
This little snippet leaves me longing for more; I’d like to see what happens next – do they reconcile? Agree to disagree, but allow for these types of familial interactions to present a sense of normalcy for Joanna? I think you’ve hit on a winner here.
I very much like your writing style; it has a fluid and grace to it that makes it easy to slip into, and is evocative without being verbose. Feelings and emotions were clearly drawn and vividly painted. The interactions between McCoy and Jocelyn seemed spot-on; regardless of the fact that they are now divorced, it’s only natural that in spite of the hurt they inflicted on one another, neither would want to see the other come to harm.
All in all a nice little gem I’m glad I stopped by to read. Good work!
