Great stuff David. I really enjoyed this vignette. This one in particular offers a great insight into the ambitious Shelby. It can be a good thing and it can create great captains but not necessarily the best of friends. Shelby though at his stage was quite cold and calculating in her ambition and schemes. In part you can admire it but also abhor it. Anyway, really enjoyed this. Makes Shelby compulsive reading. More please.

Wow. She was a cold hearted bitch from the word "go," wasn't she? It's amazing how you've built on this one-shot character from TNG and made her so fascinating. A bit like a train wreck that I can't look away from. (Not the writing -- the writing is great. It's Shelby who is the train wreck. Just to clarify.)
Definitely a well-told little story.

I've read it before-and it really shouts out Shelby's overwhelming drive. In the end, her disaffection with Liz saves her from another poor moral choice , if I recall. And Liz makes a bad call in her stead. Good tale, David!
