For some reason when I read the part about Keiko planning a desert Zen garden and using Vulcan plants in it, and Yoshi still speaking Bajoran and maybe getting into a special school because of it, it made me cry.

Is that title taken from the Heinlein story of the same name. The concept of essential systems & the critical role of engineers is the same. The difference would be that, as far as is apparent, the dissent isn't from within the technician cadre — although O'Brien is espousing the same doctrine of Functionalism as underpinned Heinlein's musings.

Does not get much darker than that, no. Thrilling stuff. I mean, horrific obviously, but the world-building (or destroying) you do here makes for some compelling reading.
