Oof! A hard, harsh reality there, of what really happens when there are explosions and the like. I think, in our post-9/11 world, we understand better than ever that percussive injuries like this are rarely pretty.

Good for N'Vek for at least doing this much but man oh man, that's rough. Broken dreams indeed. Broken bodies is more like it.

I absolutely love the Terginians, and I did a Google search and realized - they are your invention, are they not? Very smart and appropriate, to have an alien species that is non-humanoid and truly alien.

Well done and creepy. Eek I may have a nightmare or two about this.

I thought I'd revisit this in light of finishing Volume I. It again impresses with the sense of destruction and the awe factor of the event. This is a huge thing. A massive blow and the strike violent and vicious.

Ok so not knowing what to expect having not had a chance to read your material so far captain sarine, I know that there was at lest a buzz about your story.  I plan to rectify that of course and more so now. If this entry is anyhting to go by, then that buzz is certainly warranted.

The Romulan perspective of course is very interesting, and by my mileage, novel. I've not read much from a Romulan viewpoint. So I'm looking forward to your stories if you take on such perspectives.

Apart from the Romulan viewpoint we catch a brief glimpse of a command team working at the brink of disaster. A lot of trauma and a starkness to the events portrayed. I get a feeling that this story is something that really impacts on the characters and has a wider impact than I know from my perspective; but I'm really looking forward to discovering more and if I'm right about that theory. Good stuff.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for your comment mirandafave. The main character is a half-Romulan in the main story, but one thing to know is that in the timeline, the Romulans are now part of the Federation. Thus the Romulan perspective. Hope you'll enjoy Restoration when you get round to it. Joel

This was really powerful stuff. Very stark and painful at times. I don't usually find myself empathizing with Romulans, but it was impossible not to feel this one's pain. Excellent entry!

Author's Response: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. If you get a chance, take a look at the main story for Restoration, I deal with the Romulans quite a lot.

And now another new character. Fascinating. A Romulan-I look forward to your portrayal of them.

Author's Response: I may come back to N'Vek in a few more vignettes, I quite enjoyed him. Glad you liked him as well!

I also got a "numb" feeling from this piece, a feeling which jarred me at first, but grew on me as I kept reading.  At first, I thought it was just too quiet -- you didn't go into a ton of detail about what was happening around the XO, we were just kind of in his head.  And then, as I kept reading, I found that really worked on some level -- it gave a real sense of the tunnel vision that comes in a horrific situation like that, for example, the way he noticed things like the drop of blood in the holo-display, but not how or when one of his bridge officers had been taken to sickbay.

The style of this piece is a nice contrast to the action-packed scenes in the main story.  Very well done.

Author's Response: I'm glad that numb feeling came across - I wanted to keep us in and out of N'Vek's head at the same time and I'm glad I got a little of that across. It was quite a juggling act I was very unsure of, so it's cool that it paid off.

The aftermath of Starbase 2's destruction is only beginning to be felt.  You've captured the numbing horror and survivor's guilt felt by those left behind in the aftermath especially well.  Nicely done.

Author's Response: Thanks so much! Yes, the aftermath is going to resonate throughout Volume II and beyond. Thanks!
