I think you hit rather squarely on Lwaxana's motivations. After all, I do not believe we ever actually see her with a Betazoid lover or potention lover (of either gender, for that matter) throughout Next Gen or even Deep Space Nine. She just ends up with various non-Betazoid men, over and over again, and it never seems to work itself out.
Picard of course seems to find her tiresome and overbearing and probably a lot of other things. It's funny; I think Lwaxana is a better character for Majel Barrett than Nurse Christine Chapel or Number One, and I like Chapel. But there is something about Lwaxana that I think speaks to the old idea of "women of a certain age"/"the ladies who lunch" and not only does Majel nail it, but so do you.
