Gosh, I find it hard to believe that Kirk would deliver the news of her mother's death in front of a bunch of reporters. Why would he turn something so painful and personal into a media event? What was he thinking? I'd love to hear your take on this.
Author's Response: He didn't- the reporters did. Nd then he died. So she got tied to a moment in history.

Ai yi yi. Lots of anger in this, although it seems understandable. I love how she's never named, and very few details are provided. After all, they don't exactly matter, plus it would detract from what ends up being an almost universal piece. It's the cult of personality and heroism that wrapped around Kirk, and here is this woman, who's had her own life and her own pain and her own heroics, yet all anyone ever wants to talk about, is him.
Now wonder she's kinda pissed.

Not at all what I expected, but it really hit home. This must be true for so many historical figures - especially those who died young or unexpectedly. We hear so much about what made them great - what gave rise to their legendary stature - that we forget they were people, too with human weaknesses and flaws.
It's interesting that they would choose to interview your unnamed protagonist - one who got bad news from him - as opposed to someone whose life or loved ones were saved. Maybe at 112, this person is the last one alive who saw him in the flesh.
It's also relevant that this unidentified interviewee saw pain in his eyes - but not the pain of the horrible news he had to deliver to a twelve-year-old, but his own pain.
This piece really makes one think. Well done.

Oooh, I like this. It certainly shows an effect that might not have been considered.
I also like how you've sketched out how Jim Kirk the legend lives on and how the pain in his eyes was basically a man dying a death of a thousand cuts.
Very nicely written and an enjoyable read.

It's funny how a conversation can plant the seeds of a story. I liked this. It was short and to the point, but it had a big impact to the punch. Very nicely done.

Crikey Mistral - didn't expect this take. Very interesting on a number of levels. The vagueness and purposeful not giving details is very effective for the tone and purpose. It makes me want to know more. Grrr ... The fact the reporters keep coming and dragging up a very painful memory for our character is emotive. This is very well done. I liked it a lot. Plus it took you no time at al to write! Phew!
Author's Response: Yeah, well, it was really hot last night and I had been drinking beer with some friends. We got to talking about Michael Jackson's daughter and how the press will probably bug her all of the time-y'know, the 50 anniversary of Thriller, the 25th anniversary of his death (a lightbulb went off!) and when they left I spit this out. Glad you liked it.
