Where the heck were Chakotay and Tuvok?
Author's Response:
Ha! You are the FIRST person to call me out on that!
Mostly, I figured not everyone would be near enough to Earth to take a night off to celebrate someone else's mission. As far as where they might be ... Tuvok, I'm guessing, is on Vulcan getting treatment for his neurological disorder and getting to know his wife and kids again. As for Chakotay ... he's not with Seven. That much, I'm sure of.
Glad to see you're still reading, thanks for the comment. :-)

“Are you suggesting someone tried to mind-rape the ship’s computers?” Love that line.
Author's Response:
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback!

Just started reading this. Looking forward to seeing how the schism between Icheb and Maren plays out. He did show a little too much haste in trying some kind of a reconciliation.
Author's Response:
What some call haste, Icheb might call "efficiency." He was, after all, raised by Borg. ;-) Keep reading, there's a lot more to come from Icheb and Maren. Thanks for commenting!

37 different species. I'd be interested to see how many are non-humanoid.
Author's Response:
Oh, fun! A new reader! Welcome, and I hope you enjoy! As to your question ... there are a few. The bartender looks like an octopus and the chief of tactical is a Saurian (though I guess you could argue that Saurians are sort of humanoid). There may be more to come ... but really, there are lots and lots of bumpy-headed humanoid species in Trek, so they make up most of the 37 kinds.

Ha, good old John Q. How I love his affable attitude. I think the captain has warmed up a little to her crew since Day 1-now the question what the devil happened to the buoy?
Author's Response:
John's usually good for an ice breaker or a laugh. He's a fun guy. And yes, Adele is warming up to her (huge) crew little by little ... as for the buoy -- wait and see! Thanks for the shower of reviews today, trekfan, it made my day! I'm glad you're enjoying the story.

Icheb and Maren, still trying to work things out. Nothing like an awkward situation to bring the crew together ;)
Author's Response:
They're a mess, aren't they? One step forward, two steps back ... thanks for the review!
Date: 25 Mar 2010 19:34 Title: Chapter 28
Hmm...something fishy is going on here. What are the Tyndoran ships hiding?
Author's Response:
Keep reading! It's the only way to find out. :-)

I smell trap...and its a brewing big time. What is Adele to do?
Date: 25 Mar 2010 19:07 Title: Chapter 26
Icheb seems to be growing into his role as XO, but whatever could he and Maren be planning as Plan Z (not Zombies, right?) Here's hoping Plan Z isn't as bad as it sounds.
Author's Response:
Plan Z is one of those things that two genius kids high on their own intelligence cook up after hours in a lab somewhere -- the kind of thing that could either be the GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT OF ALL TIME or, you know, the end of the universe. One of the two. It's not zombies, though. :-)
Date: 25 Mar 2010 18:59 Title: Chapter 25
Dear me...bad things a brewing when Q comes near. Especially 2 Qs...
Author's Response:
Definitely unwelcome visitors! Thanks for the review.
Date: 25 Mar 2010 18:52 Title: Chapter 24
Well, I'm woefully behind everyone else, but I shall catch up-eventually. Glad to see Icheb taking the role of XO to the max, but maybe he needs to reflect back on Voyager's old XO to see how to deal with those oh so stubborn captains.
Author's Response:
Hee! Keep reading. Not only will you catch up (eventually), but you will see Icheb reflect a bit on Chakotay in an upcoming chapter.
Date: 25 Mar 2010 09:57 Title: Chapter 49
Despite the brevity of their mission so far, it’s still unsettling to see the ‘family’ broken up in this way, with the civilians departing in the uncomfortably vulnerable Sol and Luna while Tesseract herself goes deliberately in harm’s way.
Beckley is his usually detached self, analyzing the situation for whatever advantage can be gained. He appears to be the ultimate pragmatist, even to the detriment of his own humanity (if he is, in fact, really human).
John’s poignant departure and short conversation with Maren underscores his unrequited love, as well as Maren’s acknowledgment of their friendship… but only just that. John’s instinct to hold his tongue about his real feelings is a good one, but one wonders, how long can his restraint last?
And as for Icheb, he’s playing a dangerous game with his captors, one that may well have consequences not only for himself, but for Tesseract as a whole.
Terrific chapter!
Author's Response:
Thanks, Gibraltar! It is sort of unsettling to see them separate ... we'll see what happens.
Beckley as the ultimate pragmatist -- that's a pretty apt description!
John. Yes, at least he held his tongue. One can only imagine how Maren would feel having that particular bomb dropped on her as John is literally on his way off the ship while she's off to (hopefully) see Icheb. Now, he did hold his tongue for seven years before this, but that was different. A lot has changed. We'll see if he can keep his mouth shut. Of course, whether he SHOULD keep his mouth shut in the long run is another question ...
And yes, Icheb has a risky idea. He's decided he's going to be proactive. Let's see how it turns out!
Thanks again for reading and commenting. I'm very glad you're continuing to enjoy the story.
Date: 24 Mar 2010 03:19 Title: Chapter 49
Excellent job of keeping the plot marching forward while ratcheting up the tension to new levels. I really liked the first-hand account of the evacuation of the civvies, good blend of John's personal thoughts and then the occasional snippet of the tearful good-byes. Like for some reason, the Trill couple just caught his eye and stayed there.
Although, I have to admit, I'm glad to see the civvies gone. Never thought they belonged aboard a starship, particularly one sailing deep into harm's way. (Of course, I have a whole different rant about the civvies being around for Wolf 359... Gross negligance on the part of Command!)
As for John, still my favorite character, he's gotta get his head on straight. Sooner rather later. I have a bad feeling that his little Saber-class is going to need their Tactical Officer at peak performance in the next few chapters.
I guess, I would have shipped him out too. With a unknown Borg vessel bearing down on me, I would want an officer at Tactical ready to fire at a moments notice. Not one standing there with his head in his hands mourning his lost love.
Maybe Quigley need a little trip back in time, I'm sure Lieutenants Ostrowski and Garrison could whip that "little lost puppy" routine right out of him.
Things are going from bad to worse for Icheb too. Needed minutes to finish his project, and he got what 28 seconds? Did he get it done? Is the 'Tessie' sailing into a trap?
One thing is for sure, Adele doesn't have much of a margin for error today. The crew better be at battlestations when they arrive at the meeting place, or it could be a shortest rescue attempt of all time.
Author's Response:
Thanks for the review, Funngunner! Glad you liked the chapter.
I'm of two minds on the civilians on starships thing -- I think it's a horrible idea, but I understand why it would be allowed. But yeah, Wolf 359 -- NO EXCUSE for that. Total insanity.
John's head is SO not on straight right now. Hopefully a little distance will do him some good and make him more useful. We'll see ... and yes, he totally needs a trip back in time. I can just picture Beth and Garrison kicking his ass into gear!
Icheb got his stuff done. He hopes, anyway. No way to test ... we'll see if he pulls it off.
I assure you, Adele will have her people at battlestations. She's normally a diplomat ... but she doesn't mess around when it comes to the Borg. (It's a personal thing.)
Thanks for reading and commenting!
Date: 23 Mar 2010 21:34 Title: Chapter 49
Well, Well, well. So much to digest here. From John's near change of heart and big reveal to Maren to his berating himself for thinking along those lines. The question now is whether his caht with Ryzal and his thoughts here are going to draw a line under his relationship with Maren. Is he going to accept not being with her? He seems to be trying to convince himself that he is only infatuated, that it is merely a childhood romance. But for John prior to this he was a womaniser and not one for romantic notions. So this is a shock to his system and he has a lot to contend with. He seems to be of the belief maybe that he shouldn't be with Maren because he doesn't deserve it or because she belongs with Icheb. He's cutting himself out of the running - but then that saves him running and allows him to run away. He seems to be one pretty conflicted guy who doesn't know what he is thinking when it comes to Maren. So can he simply walk away?
Me thinks the outcome of this mission is perhaps going to force his hand. I'm rather wary about the safety of the two civilian ships. I don't doubt the veracity of the plan or the capability of the ships' commanders. However, this is Trek and something, somewhere has to go wrong. What with Adele's words ringing in my ears, 'Stay together' and the ominous news that they have dodgy communications - I can't possibly foresee any problems.
As for Maren, she's a bit of a mess still. No wonder she just wants to sleep. Not feeling productive and cut off from where she might be of use - either in engineering or working on the drone- she feels very isolated and alone. I like the reflection though on her mother's words and her Academy days. It points to reasons why Maren is always pushing herself and trying to be a perfectionist. She could have had any geek on campus and paired well with them but she chose uber geek Icheb. Talk about making expectations for herself. But it seems she has more and more reasons to prove herself. Pushing herself so hard is going to get her into trouble - I mean bigger trouble and danger.
That said, the relationship between her and Icheb seems to have been one that was mutually beneficial as it helped both of them to become better officers and better academics with Icheb in his own way sharing the same thoughts. Icheb himself seems to be taking his destiny into his hands in a bold and risky gambit nut one that only gives the Tesseract a slight edge in the upcoming meeting. I can hardly wait. Wider conflicts and more trouble for the Tesseract. I also love his being called Federation by Malik. Hee hee.
Now, what else could I possibly salivate over ... ? Oh no, I can't possibly think what. Hmmm ... where is that shifty Admiral smilie?
Author's Response:
Yeah, you have to kind of feel for John, don't you? He's pretty mixed up at the moment. Maybe getting off the ship for a bit will help him clear his head and figure out what he wants. Or, as you say, it could just make everything more chaotic. We'll see. ;-) As for whether he can walk away ... he's done it before. But that was a very long time ago. They are grown-ups now (in theory - ha!) and a lot has changed ...
The uber geek! Yeah, I guess Icheb kind of is that, isn't he? And Maren chose him. Which says a lot about her, doesn't it? But no one's expectations for Maren are higher than Maren's expectations for Maren. So being stuck in sickbay when Important Stuff is happening is driving her insane. And yeah, she and Icheb had quite the little symbiotic relationship going back in the day. Very complementary in many ways. "A collective of two," John called them. Unfortunately, learning to be strong together doesn't necessarily translate into being strong apart ... they've got some growing to do. Icheb is working on it ... risky though his plan may be. We'll see how that turns out.
As for the Admiral ... he totally needs a smiley. Grey-haired and perpetually smirking. Heh.
Thanks so much for the awesome review! Always very appreciated. :-)
Date: 15 Mar 2010 21:29 Title: Chapter 48
Well Ryzal certainly takes John to task. He so kindly enough considering that he has grounds for being harsher. However, it strikes me that Ryzal is a fair and decent chief and his aim is solely to ensure the safety of all. John Quigley is a proven officer - albeit befire his tenure on the Tesseract. However, if Ryzal didn't have faith in him, he'd not have given John the solemn task of protecting his own family. His desire to mentor John and shepherd his skills is productive as it keeps John in line and yet reaffirms his skillset. That said, how comes I have suddenly got an ominous feeling about the Sol which is apparently going off for safety purposes. I do hope it doesn't backfire.
Meantime, Maren and Adele are just about keeping it civil. It is a touchy subject for both. Maren can't but help associate the drones with what Icheb once was and the kindness extended to assist his escape from the collective. However, she is under the illusion that they can do this for all drones. For Adele, the drones are only a further reminder of the loss of ehr husband. Her handling of the situation is expert and it shows her diplomatic skills. She wants Maren to do this but only as a means of covering her bases and giving the captain options. Adele doesn't react to the strong language from Maren. Mind rape is a harsh term though from Maren's POV that is exactly what it is. For Adele there is a bigger picture to view and to worry about. Quite an edgy and prickly scene between the two. Normally I'd imagine Maren wouldn't be quite so vocal to the captain but she's had a rough time and of course feels close to the issue at hand. Adele impresses with her own control. She admits to taking some of the trouble out on Maren and takes a certain degree of verbal abuse from the engineer. However Adele doesn't react to it. Her comportment and handling of the unfolding situation is impressive.
Adele doesn't seem to like being backed into a corner with information or her hand being forced. This it seems is something that Icheb is beginning to realise he needs to sort when it comes to his own circumtances. But what to do about seizing control of his own destiny. And what can he do to convince either side? This should prove to be very, very interesting.
Author's Response:
MF, thanks so much for the thorough review!
I like your summation of Ryzal here -- he's fair and decent. Not chummy, though. He mostly just wants the best from the people under him and does what he can to foster that. Sometimes that means being nicer than he would like to be, sometimes it means being a jerk. Depends on the officer and the kind of motivation they require. He's a pretty careful observer of people (goes with the territory of being a security officer), so despite his own alien nature, he's understanding of the characteristics of the species he serves with.
As for the Sol and Luna ... you'll just have to wait and see. ;-)
Maren and Adele are definitely in an odd situation. Their experiences and perspective regarding the Borg could not be more different. Adele is trying her best to manage the conflict in a professional manner, but Maren in her tired, stressed and injured state is not making it easy for her.
I don't think ANYONE likes being backed into a corner or manipulated. Not Adele, and not Icheb. But all of that has been beyond Icheb's control for a long time. He's been used by the Brunali, the Borg, and even Starfleet, and he's tired of it. We'll see how he goes about trying to take responsibility for his own life ... and how those around him react to it. I hope you continue to find it interesting!
Date: 15 Mar 2010 16:28 Title: Chapter 48
Man, Ryzal was for more understanding than I expected, and perhaps even more so than John deserves given the circumstances. I especially liked that he kept referring to Maren as John's 'mate,' regardless of the actual specifics of their relationship, because that's how John's treating her. Ryzal obviously has no patience for trivial labels.
Adele distinguishes herself yet again by offering an olive branch to Maren and admitting some fault in their last, heated interaction. That's certainly something not every captain would do, or perhaps even should do... given the necessary myth of a captain's infallibility.
Now Icheb comes to an important decision to finally take full responsibility for his own destiny. I'm curious to see how this choice will affect other aspects of his life, provided he survives the coming encounter between Tesseract and the Borg Resistance ship.
Author's Response:
Thanks, Gibraltar, for the comments!
No, Ryzal is not a fan of BS overall. He calls it like he sees it. He knows John has potential and did very well at his last posting, and he's not willing to see him throw that potential away over a woman -- partly because it would be a shame, but mostly because it would be detrimental to his entire department not to have everyone, including John, functioning to the best of their abilities. With this chapter I was really trying to show the balance between the no-nonsense, alien/reptilian side of him and his job as a teacher/leader of mostly human(oid) officers.
Adele is a diplomat to her core. The Betazoid part of her craves harmony. But the human part of her (by far the larger part) is more pragmatic. She knows she has to work with Maren; knows that especially now, she really needs her expertise as well as her cooperation. So reaching out to her is part of all that. And I think Maren's made it pretty clear she doesn't believe in the infallibility of the captain, so that ship has already sailed ...
As for Icheb, he's soon going to be making a lot of choices in many areas of his life, for sure. We'll see how that goes ...
Thanks again for reading and reviewing!
Date: 14 Mar 2010 19:16 Title: Chapter 10
All very interesting and mysterious! Borg debri, subspace tears, the colony destroyed, and now Icheb was probed. He's obviously got a friend in John, and its funny how a person's best friend always seems to be the person they clash with the most. I can't help but wonder if Icheb's condition might have something in connection with his "prognosis", and that is why he wants to talk to Maren personally about what happened. This is,without a doubt, one of my favorite stories. ;D
Author's Response:
Thanks so much, KM13! I'm so glad you're continuing to enjoy the story. You'll get answers as you keep going ... don't want to spoil it for you. ;-) Thanks again for reviewing, and for the very kind compliment!
Date: 07 Mar 2010 20:03 Title: Chapter 5
For a while now, I had been planning to read this story, but just hadn't gotten around to it. Well, I finally pulled the trigger today... and I love it!
Your crew is very interesting, with a great group dynamic. One thing I really like is that your characters are very believable, one thing some writers struggle to achieve. You can sympathize with them, and understand their stories and problems. Cudos to you!
The Tesserract is a very interesting ship. The design replicating a Borg cube is ver intruging.
Now, to the story itself... Icheb's prognosis. I wonder what that is? It's mentioned that Seven of Nine had something similiar, but I've never watched Voyager. So if that is something directly from the series or not, I don't know, but I'm interested to see what exactly it is that it caused Icheb to walk away from Maren.
As for the distress call from Alaris, I'm curious to see who's making trouble.
Also, I skimmed Chapter 6, and well, Icheb mentions a "T'Pring". I'm going to assume it's not the same T'Pring that was supposed to wed Spock. ;-)
Author's Response:
Thank you very much for reading, and for the comments! I'm glad you're enjoying the story so far ... there's a lot more to come.
You'll find out eventually what's going on with Icheb. It's related to but not the same as what happened to Seven. You should be able to continue and understand everything just fine without having watched Voyager at all, but if you decide you want to fill youself in on the 'Icheb arc,' see if you can find the VOY episodes "Collective," Child's Play," "Imperfection," and "Q2." Those weren't the only episodes that featured the character, but they're the core of his arc on Voyager, and they give some background that might enrich your appreciation of this story. Again, you don't NEED to do that to follow the story ... but if you do, then you might catch on to a few 'inside' things that you wouldn't otherwise.
Oh, and this T'Pring is a totally different T'Pring than in TOS. There are only so many 'T'P...." names, you know. ;-)
I hope you enjoy the coming chapters! Thanks again for the feedback, I really appreciate it. It totally makes my day to see a new name in the reviews! Thanks for checking out my story!
Date: 05 Mar 2010 10:16 Title: Chapter 47
Maren's still a wreck despite having discovered that Icheb's still alive, while John's still playing mother hen to her. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Adele is now faced with having to decide how many people she wants to commit to this potentially disastrous rendezvous with the Borg resistance.
I'm glad to see that despite the near-overwhelming cascade of events that are threatening to overpower the crew of Tesseract, Adele can still see the value in the counsel of her senior staff.
Author's Response:
Yes, Maren is still a total disaster. With any luck, she'll be able to pull herself together and make herself useful soon. For now though ... yeah. Wreck. John's playing mother hen for sure, it's in his nature to do so. He did the same for Icheb way back in the beginning and got in trouble for it -- he just handled things in a more action-y way that time rather than sitting around. (He won't be sitting for long, though ...)
I think the remaining senior staff are the only people left on the ship that Adele still trusts ...
Thanks for the review!

Hee hee. Of course, as you expected no doubt, I loved T'Pring's response to Iden's risky plan. I share your astonishment indeed. Love it. The plan does have merit even from the surprising source. Basically, Adele knows nothing about what is ahead of them when they meet the mystery resistance movement. They may indeed be especially dangerous. Still, it is abold and brave move to shepherd the families onto the Sol and Luna. It both reassures and puts fears and doubts into the minds of those who are about to be separated from their families. So Keller and Ryzal have a lot in common and a lot to worry about - nevermind figuring a way through the current predicament.
Ryzal is a great character from the little we have so far gleamed of him. I want for their to be more of him. But then I want more of all the characters. The way you write them I could happily sit and read them discuss their favourite biscuits. I like the perspective we got from his Saurian background and how it informed some of his thinking. It is a neat slant to take. I wonder what he makes of John Q amid his persnal crises at a time of emergency for the entire ship. I doubt he is the sentimental type. Mind you he does have a family so there must be a soft spot somewhere.
As for poor John and Maren. They finally seem to get a little rest and hopefully a chance to cath up on themselves. They have both had a trying day and who knows what tomorrow will bring. The rest can't come soon enough considering Maren's nightmares which threw me for a loop at the start. Freaky and scary atmosphere created in that scene. Well done. It represent the hellish state of affairs for Maren and rest will refresh her for the challenges ahead - of which I am sure there are plenty.
So for now, all that remains to be sorted is:
- Getting Icheb back
- Figuring ou the Resistance's true motivation and purpose
- Maybe finding a way to help Icheb
- Shepherd the civilians onto the Sol and Luna and pray that nothing sinister comes of such a move - not to mention wonder who will go where in terms of their duties
Yipes! Can't see anything going wrong here ...
Author's Response:
Wrong? What could possibly go wrong?
Glad you like Ryzal. I'm not the greatest at writing "alien," but I'm hoping to get better at it through writing this character. He's got more differences than just a bumpy head.
We'll see how the plan works out ... Iden's not known for being a strategic genius, but everyone has their moments, right?
Hopefully rest does help Maren. She's a mess.
Nice list there ... we'll see if they can get it done!
Thanks for the great review!

Oh and one other detail that strikes me and should have been mentioned. What's with the child's drawing? Who drew that? And why does Adele have it in her ready room?
Author's Response:
Lucy Keller drew it in chapter 32. Adele promised to hang it up in the ready room, and she did. Continuity. :-)
Date: 21 Feb 2010 22:25 Title: Chapter 46
'Tomorrow IS going to be an interesting day!' Or I could say, 'TOMORROW is going to be an interesting day?!' Basically, today has been and so have the recent few days days been very interesting. I suppose they just have forewarning that tomorrow will be an interesting day.
Terrific stuff. Admiral Beckley continues to send shivers up the spine and still remain a rather uncertain character. What are his motivations and what is his end game?
Adele almost had cause to slap Gentry with her testy attitude. But a succient briefing that helps to put some of the cards about the situation out on the table. Now it remains to be seen what Adele opts to do in regards to the Borg drones. It also remains to be seen what she will make of this 'civil war' within the Collective. Curious and curiousier. Whether Adele believes them is another matter as she has raised the spectre on whether Icheb has been compromised. When you consider his predicament and his captors who is to say if he has or hasn't. What is the story going to be?
Fabulous. Just fab. Lots of questions and heaps of desire to get our next fix.
Author's Response:
Hehe -- yes, they have advance warning this time that Stuff Will Be Happening tomorrow: Either they'll all be blown up by Malik's super anti-Borg weapon, or they'll find out what the heck is going on. And maybe get their XO back. Or not. We'll see!
Glad Beckley still delivers the shivers ... though he, of course, he has no idea why you feel that way.
Adele is in an interesting place right now. She doesn't know who to trust. Beckley freaks her out, her ex-Borg XO has been kidnapped by Borg more lethal than the original Borg, but he and the super Borg want to talk and say they need her ... and she's got three live drones on her ship who probably contain a ton of information, but she needs to decide what to do about them and the best person she's got left for dealing with Borg is in sickbay, injured and on the edge of losing it. It sucks to be Adele.
Glad you're still with it and still reviewing, MF! Thanks so much!
Date: 21 Feb 2010 11:02 Title: Chapter 46
The Borg resistance leader is as charming as ever. I wonder how effective an ally Malik might be should he ever be in danger of losing the strategic advantage in any cooperative relationship with the Tesseract crew. That’s presuming, of course, that he’d have any interest in such an arrangement.
Though Gentry’s presence in this case is advantageous to Adele, I can foresee occasions when having the time-delay of significant distance from Starfleet Command and their army of JAG attorneys might be a godsend for a captain contemplating various forms of action. Sometimes it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
And once again we see Beckley as the proverbial fly on the wall in Adele’s ready room. I’m still not sure as to what his ultimate agenda might be, or on behalf of whom (or what), but I’m enjoying the slow reveal of his character regardless.
Author's Response:
Malik, charming? Ha! ;-) We'll see what he's interested in ...
It's absolutely easier to ask forgiveness than permission, and though Adele is playing by the rules (more or less) now, that's no guarantee she'll continue to do so.
Glad you're still enjoying Beckley. Thanks for reading, and the review!

Tensions within the senior staff between Maren and Icheb. I'm curious to see how you continue this evolution as you further develop the characters.
Author's Response:
Tensions? Between those two? Nah. (Okay, maybe a little.) ;-)
Keep reading ... you'll see what the deal is between them.
It's great to have a new reviewer on board! I hope you keep commenting! Thanks!

Irina definitely seems to be the sort who loves to love and doesn't care what anyone else thinks. She also seems to be the sort who gets what she wants. I have a feeling Icheb is going to get very familiar with the feeling of having a bullseye painted on him.
Seriously, I like how you've introduced Irina as well as the rest of the medical crew--they're going to be busy.
Author's Response:
Irina's definitely a bit of a Shelby. ;-) She wants new experiences and seeks them with abandon. The medical crew is going to be super busy, and you haven't even met the CMO yet.
As for Icheb having a bullseye painted on him? You have NO idea. Familiar feeling, indeed.
Thanks so much for the review!
