Actually quite a fun scene - a couple of frenemies getting too deep into their cups. Every time I read Terrence Glover, I hear Michael Beech's voice - he's not as large a man as Glover is described, but he would totally nail the aggression, torment and perverse charm of the character.
The tumble down the stairs was a really nice touch - as was Sandhurst's holding back on the parting shot.

It was a lot of fun to write. As you've no doubt noticed throughout the series, Glover lives rent free in Sandhurst's head most of the time, so it was enjoyable to have these two meet face-to-face for once.

I love seeing Captains as more humanized, more "less than perfect." I particularly like that this wasn't something that happened while on duty, but rather in a bar. It adds a tremendous amount of character to Sandhurst.

I STILL want to punch Glover in the face for this. Granted, wanting to punch Glover in the face is almost ALWAYS my response given the atrocity he committed, but this is personal. What a vindictive SOB. He's truly being *awful* to one of my favorite fanfic Trek captains ever, and that will not stand.
I just wish that Sandhurst hadn't been drinking to that degree during the confrontation, though--that was a critical mistake, especially in dealing with someone like Glover. In a very, very weird way that part almost reminded me of Damar.
Still, I really like Sandhurst. I may have to read "Taking Leave" to feel better again... ;-)
Oh...and even though I normally don't like Pava, it's pretty cool to see him be so laid-back with his counterpart under Glover's command and not let the commanding officers' problem get in the way of their enjoyment.

Strange as it sounds, this little encounter was cathartic for Sandhurst. It's like running into a particularly nasty bully from your past, only to find that now, as an adult, you can stand toe-to-toe with them.
Perhaps drinking wasn't too smart on Sandhurst's part, but then he may not have been able to say some of the things that were clearly needing to be aired.
And yes, Pava won't transfer his anti-Glover antipathy to Terrence's subordinate, and most certainly not another member of the Teams who rescued him from a particularly nasty battle.

Donald!!! My poor, drunk, and terribly funny when he's poking a skunk with a stick baby. Sam- this was a blast to read. Donald's come a long way in not rising to Glover's bait. Better yet, being able to serve it back to him in ice-cold little packages made this scene absolutely delicious! Wonderful!

At this point in their careers, Donald truly doesn't care what Glover thinks of him anymore. He was having fun poking at Terrence, to be sure, but a lot of it wasn't intentional as it might have seemed. He just doesn't drink often, and when he does, never to excess... bit of a lightweight our Captain Sandhurst.
Glover came prepared to verbally fence with the young lieutenant he used to know and terrorize, only to find a capable starship captain in his place. This Sandhurst has commanded people in battle, he's been brutalized at the hands of a madman, he's stared into his own personal abyss and confronted the demons he found there.
And Terrence, Terrence here is lashing out in pain at someone he perceives as an easy target. Of the two men, Glover is the one hurting more at this particular juncture, and through his drunken haze, Sandhurst realizes this on some level.

Ah, there's nothing so bad that a little inebriation can't throw fuel on the fire, eh? Very enjoyable exchange between two men with impressive and varied backgrounds of command. You conveyed a great deal of information in a concise way and kept it interesting throughout. I was also impressed with the depiction of increasing drunkenness. Too many people go for the exaggeration, but you hit the nail on the head. Had I been in the position of their crew members, I'd have done the same, beat a retreat and let those two duke it out among themselves.

Thanks! Yes, the alcohol certainly didn't help matters, but this particular conversation wouldn't have been any more cordial without it. Some people just don't see eye-to-eye, no matter how much they may have in common.

Boy heck, this is something else. One of the strengths of the United Trek universe, apart being able to share the wealth of backstory and universe building, is the fact that the different characters particularly some of the captains don't get along.
Glover and Sandhurst have a long and chequered past. I love that they so far have found it difficult to bury their problems with one another and continue to stir up trouble when around one another.
This scene here was awesome and really drove home the seperation between the two captains. Despite so many shared experiences and friends they can't get along. This was a very combustive conversation and yet both men probably held back a lot. You'd hate to see them go all out and pull no punches. This was edgy and pulsating with male egos and pride. The tension and friction really well conveyed and great dialogue > Some of Pava's lines were as usual just priceless. 'I'm magnificent!' Hee hee. ;)
Good stuff Gibraltar. Tight writing and terrific character moments.
