This is a wonderful tale of destiny delayed, but finally achieved.  A very poignant look at what might-have-been with sharply drawn characters and potent emotional resonance.

I'd be interested to see what happens after this older, wiser Jim Kirk graduates the academy.  How does he make up for lost time, and will he ever encounter those who might have been his crew in the alternate reality we know and love?

Author's Response:

Sorry this is late - I've been away for a week.  Glad you enjoyed it.  I have been thinking about subsequent events as well - maybe something will come of it, maybe not... ;-)

This is exactly how I always felt Jim Kirk would be...in any universe. Wonderful!

Author's Response:

Thanks, Terilynn.  I'm glad it still read as Jim Kirk, even though it was an AU. :)

Wonderful Lil Black Dog. A loving portrait of how things could have been different for Kirk, explored with Sam's eyes too, and it showed the commitment and courage of Kirk even in this alternate reality as he stays by his mother's side. Very touching that. And telling too that in the end, after his mother is gone, Kirk knows he is not in the place he belongs. He ought to be out there among the stars. Yet, he knew his place that he belonged was by his mother's side whilst she were alive. Nice. Effective.

Author's Response:

Thanks, Miranda.  As always, the feedback is greatly appreciated! :D

Damn you for making me cry. The ramifications of this alt universe notwithstanding, the sheer amount of feelings you packed into this combined with the beautiful imagery and construction left me in tears. And smiling. Excellent.

Author's Response:

Mistral - you old softie! ;-)  You know, while writing this it was all I could do not to cry myself.  I kept watching in increasing agitation as the words and images kept pouring forth from my fingers.  I generally don't do 'dark', so I have no idea where this came from.  It hurt like hell to put the Kirk boys through that, but they are tough, and resilient, and that's part of their charm.

I'm pleased that the imagery came off well - it's something I'm still not very comfortable with.  There are those who have a gift for it - Anna, Nutty, Steff, you in 'The Revenant' ::shivers involuntarily just thinking about it:: - and unfortunately, I don't belong to that exclusive club.  But I'm trying, and learning, and feedback like this makes me feel like I'm making progress, so thanks a bunch!  Your support and thoughtful reviews are greatly appreciated!!

Very well written story, and I can't help but think that this would've made a much better version of events than what transpired in the Star Trek movie that came out recently.  A pity they couldn't have consulted you before making that travesty of a film. :)

I'm guessing I've already lost this challenge ;)

Author's Response:

Flatterer!  But seriously, thanks for the kind words.  I didn't intentionally set out to write an alternate version of Trek: 2009, but when I was done I couldn't help thinking along the same lines. ;-)  Sam Kirk was a character that unfortunately was not given his due in TOS.  I have tried to remedy that in several pieces I've written.  I just hope I did him, and Jim, justice in this one.

And don't count yourself out!
