Wow, this was poignantly sad. Very well-written piece!
Author's Response: Thank you! I'm glad you liked the story.

I have to write on this one again, given what I now know about the ignominious way Peter David killed Captain Janeway in Before Dishonor. I don't remember if that book had been out before you wrote this, or if it came out after--but even as someone who didn't like VOY before, I have to say it: you gave her a much more dignified, more fitting end than she got from Pocket Books.
And I am still wondering--did you find yourself inspired by "Ties of Blood and Water" at all?
Author's Response: Thank you! This story was very close to my heart, and I'm afraid, my swan song for Janeway fic. No, the inspiration came from some RL events, unfortunately. I haven't read the Peter David book, but I did hear about it much later after it had already been out for a while. If you're looking for a good "fix" to his ending, by the way, I strongly recommend Alara Rogers' "West" series, in which she very logically continues Janeway's story after the events of "Before Dishonor." The closest I've come to fic related to "Ties of Blood and Water" so far has been the last segment of my "Five Things That Never Happened to Kira Nerys". Perhaps one day in the future I'll do more, as you're right, the relationship between Ghemor and Kira is one that definitely deserves to be explored further.

Ok, you got me good with that one. Your characterization was excellent, you stayed in stride with the setting of the original episode and you ended it properly, without some magic technobabble fix. I haven't rated any stories with stars lately but you get some for this. I honestly believe if SNW was still in business you could get this printed. Awesome job.
Author's Response: Thanks! I'm glad you felt the ending worked. (SNW in its day didn't allow the death of any "main" characters, even though PB has since killed off Janeway in one of their pro-novels).

Wow.
The feeling I get when I read this story is almost up there with the end of DS9's "Ties of Blood and Water"--and that's saying something, considering I don't normally even like Voyager, and Janeway in particular. The burial scene in particular definitely reminds me of seeing where Tekeny had been laid to rest, especially in the imagery. And though it doesn't have that "family" resonance peculiar to the plot of "Ties," it's definitely very moving.
I like the scenes you picked of her time on New Earth; the dialogue really drove home the point. At least to me, and the way I personally believe about death, it seems that while it helped to give Janeway a purpose in her final days, she definitely had reconciled herself to her death and maybe those visions were a sign of her imminent passage to the afterlife. The difference between how she died in the end, and how it seemed she wanted to die before, is that this time, she died after having truly done all she could. And that's what made it work.
I hope we see more of your writing, because I'm definitely liking what I see! :-)
Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm glad the story worked for you. It's never easy to kill off a beloved character, but I think this was a fitting way for Janeway to go out.

I liked this story, (had to read it at different times through-out the morning). But I liked it because you really got the dialog right. Kept me coming back to finish it. 7000 words is a lot!! But I did it! Great flow.
I was never a BIG Voyager fan, but I did watch my fair share, and you nailed Janeway, which is not always an easy thing to do (the writing on Voyager proved that)
And I have to say that at the end, it was indeed sad. I expected THE DOCTOR to save her, and was surprised when he didn't. This is a real as it gets...great job!

A very sad but very well written story. I have always sympathized with Janeway, with her redoubtable spirit, and you have captured it here perfectly. That also was one of the best episodes charcter-wise in VOY, and it makes such perfect sense that in the end that place is where she returns.
Thank you for sharing.
Author's Response: Janeway has always been my favorite Trek character, and I'm glad you think I did right by her. Thanks for your feedback.
