Another fantastic short story in this ever expanding universe of Captain Sydney Satterwhite. This was a terrific look into her past, and the people in her family that helped to shape her prior to her being subjected to the crucible that is Captain Sutek. 
I'm very much looking forward to her first adventure aboard the Adirondack.

What a sense of warmth I got from Sydney's sister! And I can just feel her pride rolling off of her in waves as she speaks. It's hard not to catch the sense of joy she has on Sydney's behalf. I think that's really nice to see, given how easy it can be for siblings to get jealous of each other.
The look into this family, and the dynamic between the siblings, is excellent--most often joyful, but sometimes bittersweet, like when you describe the effect Neesee's death had on them.
One other thing from her personality: am I right to say she's got kind of a liking for Shakespeare? That little sign-off sure points to it. :-)
And the other interesting thing was what a strong sense of place and culture I got from her, and how comforting that was. I'm one that often worries about how Earth society has become in the 24th century--homogenized, bland, etc. (And I do portray it that way sometimes, because of my dislike.) But I am glad to see that I can read this and get that kind of feel for the place. I hope I'm right in saying this--but I'm going to say somewhere in the Deep South, a family that's been in that area for many generations, possibly African-American?
Author's Response: Absolutely right! I wasn't sure if anyone would have guessed that about Sydney, Savannah and their family. It's always a bit of a balancing act trying to get across culture and ethnicity through speech without falling back on odd words and/or pronunciations. It helps that I've been exposed to many ways of speaking in my life. Plus, I pick up accents quite easily and I find myself lapsing in and out of different ones at times.
Both Sydney and Savannah have a liking for literature, but you'll see it more pronounced in Sydney, being the storyteller and all.

You can learn a ton about a person by listening to the people who are closest to them.
And Vannah clearly loves her sister without compromise which makes this and especially charming piece.
