Loved it! God, you do write this pair so well! You know, I know almost nothing about them and yet I feel like I know so much. It is a tribute to your writing skill, no doubt. Thank you for sharing this, so sweet, so right. Great job!

Author's Response: You're quite welcome! :)

Wow.  I remember I asked you before about the relationship between Sydney and Sutek--and this really seems like this could be the point where it really changed: Sutek allowing a bit of emotion to be seen and Sydney reciprocating by allowing him the honor of pinning her new rank on her.

I think this story really brings home the relationship to me, makes it believable and understandable--and very much alive.

One tiny question about Starfleet custom, though...as a military brat, I know I attended pinning-on ceremonies for my dad, which were usually quite public for any on base whose duties would allow them to attend.  Is that custom practiced in Starfleet anymore?  Or is it that instead, one chooses the circumstances, the way Sydney did?  (Don't worry--I won't jump all over you if the custom has changed...if it has, I can easily make allowances given some other suppositions I have about the nature of Starfleet.)

Author's Response: There are two pinning-on ceremonies I remember. In a DS9 episode when Sisko was promoted to captain, there was a kind of get-together with family and the senior staff, and Jake pinned on the fourth pip. The other was on Voyager when Tuvok was promoted and Janeway pinned it on. I supposed if there had been more than two days between when Sydney was promoted and when she had to leave for the Adirondack, there would have been something grand to mark the occasion. But I kinda like it this way.;)

Thanks for reading! :)

This was especially well done.  Sutek's presence helped to calm Sydney's nagging fears about her promotion, and it has given both of them (whether Sutek admits it or not) some emotional closure to their former Captain/XO relationship.

A phenomenally crafted scene.

Author's Response: Thanks! Good observation about Sutek's calming effect on Sydney. Might have to explore that a little more!

That was awesome. Firstly, great to read more of Sydney's adventures. And as other reviewers have stated it is a nice look at a newly minted captain. What is especially affecting and touching is Sydney meeting her mentor and former CO. Our tough guy Sutek has Vulcan pride in his protege. The act of his putting the command pips on her collar is a really nice touch, played out very well without being sentimental. Simple but effective. I look forward to her adventures on the Adirondack. P.S. I love your name choices, for Sydney and the ships.

Author's Response: Yep, looks like our tough guy is a bit of a softie. But don't worry, he still the big bad Vulcan we know. ;) Thanks for reading! :)

As I said on the BBS-this is really emotional for such a simple set of actions. Really well done.

Author's Response: Thanks! :)

Turns out the hype was justfied.

Excellent follow up. Any chance this may grow into a feature length series? Now that would be fun.

Author's Response: Thanks for reading! There will be a few more short ones; I'll probably gather those into an anthology. I'm brainstorming on three longer pieces. I can't say when they'll be ready.
