This is a great premise. I am disturbed that not all parts of the tale are posted-I hope you will fix that. I like to finish what I start!
Author's Response: Everything that is written is posted. I've been working on this series since 2003 or thereabouts, and it's supposed to have between 31 and 33 separate stories in it. I've made a commitment to get story 13, which will be fairly long, done by May 27th and then a bunch after that will be much shorter so I can just knock them out.

A terrific take on episodes that really should have shown that much more was at stake than either Janeway or Q showed/believed.
I think you take a fascinating turn on the story and the imposed sentence to humanity is terrifying after centuries of star trekking.

I’d heard a lot of good things about this series, and thought I’d give it a read. I’m very glad I did.
This opener is a startlingly grim beginning to a wonderful premise. Humanity confined to the Sol system by a vengeful Continuum. For our species, truly a fate worse than death and far more damning than oblivion.
Janeway wrestles with her anger at Q at the same time as she tries to come to terms with her own complicity in this disaster.
Excellent stuff!

This was actually quite good. I didn't expect to like this story since I have never 'gotten' Janeway. It shows what consistant writing could have done for that show...now I have to find the follow up....What inspired you set your story in such a dark way?

Author's Response: The episode "The Q and the Grey" treats the concept of a civil war in a community of godlike immortal beings, which is blowing up stars in our universe, as a giant hilarious joke, an excuse for why Q is trying to get Janeway to have his baby. Voyager's own continuity makes it clear that the weapons are new, because if they had existed in the previous Voyager Q episode, Quinn wouldn't have had to get the Continuum's permission to die, he'd just have had to get a gun. But the episode doesn't even *touch* on what the psychological impact of suddenly being able to kill each other with weapons would do to the Q. Janeway's own culpability in ruling on a matter internal to a species she knows almost nothing about, and thus touching off the war, is ignored; Janeway treats the civil war as a nuisance Q is inflicting on her, whereas in any other episode where a starship captain accidentally caused a war, they'd be falling all over themselves to set it right. It is a terrible, terrible episode with the seeds of brilliance inside it, and it bothers me so much I keep rewriting it to make it better in fic after fic. I wrote this story to make it clear that war is not a joke, and to show the possible consequences of both Janeway and Q being totally flippant about his people trying to kill each other. So that's why this is an incredibly dark story and an incredibly dark series. Both Q and Janeway pay in horrible ways for their mishandling of each other during the war, and between them they drag the entire galaxy and the Q Continuum down with them.

Ah! My hero does get a look-in. Awesome. Mostly, though, I'm struck by the sheer notion of humanity being so confined in such a small space. It's beyond creepy and into some level that goes way the Hell beyond even disturbing. That after all this work, we could be thrown right back.
Author's Response: You mean Scotty, right? He will have a bigger role in "Why Can't I Be Saved By Science", which goes into more detail about the efforts Janeway describes here. (If you can rec me some good canon-based Scotty fic, that would help me, because it's been years since I was hip-deep in TOS and while I'm pretty sure I can still do Kirk and Spock with my eyes closed, I didn't obsess over Scotty as a kid, so help getting back into him would be appreciated. :-))
