This crew and her captain seem a little indifferent, or at least unfazed by the end of the war, their main concern apparently being their loss of relevancy. I can see part of the dilemma, of course, the sense of a lost purpose can be a demoralizing thing. On the other hand, peace is always a good thing, even if you are soldier on a warship designed to do battle.

And as it turns out, these soldiers will get a mission even in peace time. So no mothballing just yet.

I'm enjoying this series so far and looking forward to exploring more of these stories and characters.

Ha, that's some bad timing for the most powerful starship in the fleet to roll out of dry dock. Looks like they are going to miss the one thing they were essentially commissioned for.

Oh well, I'm sure there will be plenty of other opportunities for this ship and crew to shine. The galaxy after all won't cease being a dangerous place, war or no war.

Character vignettes are a crucial bit of story-telling for a brand new crew made up of fully original characters. We need to know who these people are and what makes them tick and this chapter doesn't disappoint on that front, particularly the tale of a relationship rekindled. The fact that the relationship is between two women is particularly interesting as we don't get to see that very often even though it is likely to be much more common place in the 24th century than it would be today. Kudos for going down that road.

Katie's dramatic history is a nice touch as well, and probably a not so unlikely story in a time of brutal war with the Dominion.

A neat little flashback to give us history and context.

Looks as if even flag officers can be mavericks who go against the grain to follow their instincts and prefer asking for forgiveness instead of permission.

It certainly worked out for Murphy. Not sure what this kind of approach will do to the man's career.

But hey, Starfleet gets a purpose-built starship and a captain who is more than willing to support such a project, no wonder with this kind of history. It takes a special breed of starship officer to be comfortable enough to stand in front of the high brass and not even flinch. Let's just hope he won't run his ship like a Klingon Bird of Prey, there ain't enough fresh Blood Wine in all the Federation I venture.

Certainly an interesting way to start a story, a time trial. Let's find out what this new ship can do. And she certainly delivers, smashing a few records in the process. We get a brief glimpse at this crew with a few hints at their personality and enough to make one curious to learn more about these characters.

I'm certainly intrigued. Good start.
