Wow, thanks for letting me share that wistful morning with young Leonard McCoy. You really let me into his heart, with its grief for his father and his hopes for the future. It's sad knowing that his dream of a happy family life will never be realized. There will be no peaceful breakfasts with Jocelyn and Joanna, and no easy private practice. But we will all come to know and love him.

This was so sweet, and so normal. The problem with those normal moments is that you never know how long they're going to last...Thank you for this glimpse into McCoy's life.

This will always be one of my favorite non-Scott-centric pieces of yours Steff. Its mood is spot-on perfect and its easy to slip into the emotional perspective of McCoy's character. You always know how to direct your readers to find the complexities in the simplest of tales and point directly at the heart of humanity when you do.

Author's Response: Thank you much, Terilynn. I do love writing McCoy, just never quite as much as I do Scotty. I'm glad I could handle him well.

You always seem to be at your best when you describe these everyday encounters, when you show that life in the future remains on its most fundamental levels the same as it always has been.  Some things...family in particular...are just timeless.

As my mental soundtrack for this story, I get a VERY strong impression of "Cat's in the Cradle" (or whatever the real title is for that song).  It has that same sense of impending regret.

Excellent work!

Author's Response: I don't think I had a soundtrack for it, but that fits this one too. Thank you very much! I try pretty hard to show that people are still people and am glad when it comes across.

I will say this again..STAR TREK V, as hated as it is (I love it by the way) contains Dee's finest acting scenes; period. And your story is opening up chapter I DEFINATELY want to read more of....don't leave it here. I want to know what he felt.

Sybok opened a can of worms. Its time someone dealth with it...bravo zulu!!!

Rob

Author's Response: I don't plan on writing much more in this, but 'First...' is another McCoy story that touches on his early life. Thanks for the comment!

You pulled it off, as I said when this posted at TREK bbs. There is a wistfulness here of a man who knows he's lost something precious and just wants to hold onto it a moment more...

Author's Response: Thank you! It's still not one of my favorites, but I'm glad that it reaches others.

Brief, yet gut-wrenching. Regret is perhaps the most potent of emotions, and you've captured it flawlessly here.

Author's Response: Thank you, Sam. I might not write the rest of the cast often, but am grateful when I seem to pull it off.
