Whereas you say I bring out the best in minor characters you do as much with the major ones and no less here. Both touching and satisfying with McCoy, getting ready for his date but getting one over the bully. And above all, him being that classic Southern gent.
A shame it ended as it did with Jocelyn.

Some things never change. There will always be bullies, but once young Leonard got warmed up, he held his own with this one...and got the girl. "Poindexter". That had to hurt.
I'm a little concerned about him sipping moonshine on that back porch...

Exactly. This is Leonard's lightbulb moment where he realizes brains can triumph over braun. We also see his compassion for all life start to emerge here, as he ccontemplates how to defeat Scott without doing any permanent damage, and magnanimously helps the bully to his feet after the fight.
The moonshine is part of my personal canon for McCoy. Right or wrong, as we saw him turn to alcohol in troubling/difficult times as an adult, I rooted that habit in his youth, which to my mind was fraught with emotionally trying incidents. If you read my story 'Childhood's End' it deals with McCoy's backstory prior to enlistment in Starfleet and we see the moonshine enter into the picture in the chapter 'Turning Point.'

Thanks, jespah. Not a calamity in the true sense of the word, but surely one to someone experiencing teenage angst - a situation I daresay we have all faced in one form or another at some point in our lives.
