Date: 06 Nov 2014 07:10 Title: Desan's Fight
Desan appears to lead a very complicated life, and one wonders at the casual stride in which he takes a very nearly lethal attack. Now that he's survived Dakbar's attempt, Desan will doubtless become a more profound presence in Rychel's life, not less... which means the Cardassian's plan backfired entirely.
Author's Response: Oh, you've not even cracked the surface of the iceberg that is Desan ;-D

Looks like SI has its own little world on the starbase, complete with its dedicated sickbay and some classified projects which require a cold and dark environment. Or perhaps they just like to keep things mysterious.
I wonder if Desan is violating regulations by bringing his sister into an environment she's likely not cleared for.
The conversation regarding her suicide attempt remains guarded, which is not surprising. She does not appear like a suicide survivor and it be interesting to get the full story on what went through her mind.
The upcoming encounter with Dakar is interesting. Does Desan have an interest in him beyond to his relationship with his sister and his betrayal?
Date: 04 Nov 2014 23:51 Title: Investigation
Even after all this I'm somewhat undecided on how I feel about Dakbar. Consequently I'm not sure if I think Griffon's tactic here of withholding and/or twisting the details was a cruel trick or a clever piece of interrogation tactics.
In the end it made little difference other than to upset Dakbar. And regardless of how I feel about him, I suppose he deserves that at least.
Author's Response: Marian writes Dakbar as a very polarizing character. He's JUST likable enough that the reader has empathy for him, but not so much that you really pity. Bad things don't fix bad things, afterall!
Date: 03 Nov 2014 23:18 Title: Not-so-Divine Intervention
SI agents have the coolest tools.
One of the really interesting things about this story is that you explore subject matters we don't usually come across in Trek very often, such as rape and suicide attempts.
The bad thing seems to be that all those things seem to be happening to Rychel who seems like the nicest person in the world and not at all deserving of all this bad luck she's been having.
I'm curious to see how she and her brother, as well as Starfleet will handle this incident and move forward from it.
Also not sure if Darby will make another appearance but that's a hell of a story as well, especially how he just, apparently sacrificed himself, or at least his status as a Q, to save Rychel. Like that girl needs any more guilt in her life.
Author's Response: Rychel sort of started out in my head as the antithesis to me. I worked for many areas in the worst areas of the streets of Baltimore, and I feel like that jaded me, but at the same time made me rather world-wise. From there, she sort of developed into the "Anti-Mary Sue" - she displays many Mary Sueish traits, but at the same time, they are often her downfall rather than her strength.
Darby is kind of a rare performer on Talon. Him saving Rychel was partially a lead up to another plot. I debated taking it out since that whole storyline is a massive deterrence from the rest of the story, but I think with all the bad things that happen to the Talon, it's good to show that there's SOMEONE looking out for her crew.
Date: 29 Oct 2014 13:50 Title: The Only Way Out is Within
For a moment there I was thinking that getting drunk was a pretty good idea. I mean she just found out the man she's hopelessly in love with tried to kill her. If there's ever a reason to grab the bottle, that would be it.
But things took a bad turn quickly. Also somewhat understandable considering the desperation she felt. Good thing she realized the errors of her ways.
I've also detected another trend. Rychel in her underwear. I like that one.
Author's Response: LOL, Rychel does spend a rather large percentage of this story in little to no clothing... I would love to say that I did it deliberately as a metaphor about her vulnerability, but I really didn't. That said, my subconscious is good at doing such things without my conscious awareness ;-D
Date: 28 Oct 2014 14:47 Title: Understanding
Rychel is right, Griffon must have done what he did on purpose, after all her actions are hardly suprising given the circumstances. Griffin could have simply isolated the cell earlier or have her escorted outside. Asking her to walk by herself past Dakbar's cell must have been a deliberate action.
Author's Response: Rychel contests that it was a set up, and therefore can't be held against her.
Date: 28 Oct 2014 01:55 Title: Desan's Fight
And here we see what appears to be Dakbar orchestrating a hit on Desan. The chapter seems to suggest that this was intended by Dakbar as a way to protect himself from potential discovery by Desan. As horrible as this is, it's still a more palatable explanation than Dakbar working for Desan's arch-nemesis.
How quickly Rychel and Desan's roles become reversed. Never a dull moment aboard Talon!
Author's Response: Dakbar's methods are often extreme, and triggered primarily by desperation and fear. I THINK, in this case, that he was trying to do the "right" thing... He's just a little... misguided.
Date: 28 Oct 2014 01:54 Title: The Carnival
I loved the intricate detail of the acrobatic troupe's performance, and the cascade of emotions Rychel experienced during the event. It figures she'd wait until the emotional spike caused by the trapeze act to finally succumb to her roiling emotions.
And here is another of Desan's friend/allies in the form of Nike's captain. Here's hoping his actually the man he appears to be, I don't think this young woman can take any more enemies.
Author's Response: Dark thoughts tend to strike when you least expect them, I've found. Rychel has gone through a lot, and this is still merely the beginning ;-)
Date: 27 Oct 2014 16:18 Title: Torn Loyalties
I say this much for Griffon, the man's good at what he does and he knows just what kind of questions to ask and what to look for to get answers.
But even so, the Rychel/Dakbar relationship remains one of the most complicated ones on this ship, perhaps even in all of Starfleet and the security officer gets another taste of this here. Personally I am much less impressed by Dakbar, if anything I feel a certain sense of pity for the man.
Author's Response: I passed along your thoughts about Griffon to Jim, and he said Thank you!
The Facebook relationship status "It's Complicated" was basically invented for Dakbar and Rychel.
Date: 26 Oct 2014 13:33 Title: Bittersweet Return
Yes, the truth hurts, don't it, Rychel?
Sad thing is, everything he said about Dakbar was absolutely correct and clearly she is starting to realize it herself. It's of course also true that Dakbar was and probably still is extremely conflicted about the things he has done and his feelings for Rychel. Is that enough to redeem him? Normally I'd say no but if there is love involved, on both sides, perhaps it can transcend. But it would take a hell of an effort to do so.
Date: 25 Oct 2014 16:41 Title: Celebration
The odd familiarity between Rychel and Dakbar almost gives a matrimonial impression, as if these two people have been together for years, instead of weeks.
If it were a marriage it might not even be such an unusual one. After all they wouldn't be the first couple where at least one of them has terrible and dark secrets. Oddly enough the fact that he's fantasizing about her death isn't even the biggest one.
Author's Response: I think the narrative seems a bit "quicker" because once action starts happening, there aren't many "quiet moments at home" type of things. Then again, they did fall for one another rather quickly, given the circumstances.
I don't know about Dakbar, but Rychel could never do a "boring" marriage :-D
Date: 24 Oct 2014 13:47 Title: The Rescue
Clearly I counted out Dakbar too soon. I should have i known that if Rychel is in danger, he won't be far away. And it's nice to see that he still remains as conflicted as ever. It's a tough spot to be in when you seem to be in love with a person but can't stop imagining killing her at the same time.
Not much info on the Mehtak here but I thought it was curious that Rychel immediately switched her phaser to kill with no further explanation. I'm assuming it has something to do with their personal shields.
Also, did I miss a chapter in which they discuss the Prophets? That seemed like new information to me.
Author's Response: Dakbar is in a very bad position overall, and he gets more and more conflicted by the day. You had mentioned before the theme of heights, and it all ties back from falling from grace (also from the Decemberist's song "We Both Go Down Together").
Hm, I may need to put additional information about the Mehtak at the beginning of this chapter. They're the main "baddy" in the Gamma Quadrant in USS Talon. Most of the people who have read this to date are Talon members, so it didn't occur to me that more info might be warranted. The Mehtak oppressed a Federation world called Etimon for many years. They also have showed up unexpectedly in several of Talon's other away team missions; they're basically "at war" though they are more the sort to use "cloak-and-dagger" style tactics than larger attacks. At present, the Federation does not know where their homeworld is.
The Prophets weren't specifically discussed, but it was heavily hinted out in the chapters where Dakbar is warring with himself. We decided not to write specifics because it seemed heavy-handed. Also, since it is from an RP we sometimes skip ahead.
Date: 23 Oct 2014 20:40 Title: Down on Maeri
An action packed chapter here which is a nice little change of pace from the mostly character driven segments we've had up to now. And yet this one was no less tense. I'm also spotting a theme in this story ... heights. Somehow Rychel cannot escape them.
It was nice to see her in a role of authority as well as showing off her professional competency, something we haven't really seen much of.
Now the question is how is she getting out of this spot? I'm guessing Dakbar will not be around this time to almost kill her but yet somehow also safe her.
Author's Response: Rychel is somewhat of an adrenaline junky (in addition to a person who lives by the life motto "The greater the risk, the greater the reward").
Date: 23 Oct 2014 05:19 Title: Cardassian Conundrum
Dakbar may have overplayed his hand here. Seeing as his adversary was raised among his own people (presumably), she's much more likely to see through his guise. He's becoming increasingly sloppy as his emotions override his training and programming.
Author's Response: Indeed. Of course, he's gotten away with his deceptions for a while, but it can't go on forever! Thanks for the feedback!
Date: 22 Oct 2014 16:45 Title: Desan's Fight
Oh good, he survived, thanks to Rychel and Fedorov's quick thinking. A lot of things are happening to this family and the one constant seems to be Dakbar. What exactly is his mission and how does it involve Desean? Rychel might only be involved here due to her poor choice in men.
Author's Response: Hey now, Rychel didn't get to choose Desan, she got stuck with him :-D
All I'll say at this point is that the rabbithole goes pretty deep!
Date: 21 Oct 2014 17:38 Title: The Carnival
You'd think Rychel would be freaking out a lot more about being lifted high in the air after the hiking incident. Instead it's the beefy dancers that get to her. This woman is hopelessly in love to a point it's almost embarrassing.
And now the object of all her affections has had a hand in taking out - possibly killing - her brother? As if this relationship needed any more complications.
Author's Response: Rychel grew up in that insular sort of family that protected her from everything, and even after having been in Starfleet for a bit, she's *still* a bit naive about danger. Then again, she's also extremely self-sacrificing, so even WITHOUT her upbringing, she would probably find SOME way to overlook it all.
Date: 21 Oct 2014 00:42 Title: Torn
Ludir's correct to feel fear here, for Dakbar is dangerously close to reverting to type. Rychel's blinded by medication, her injuries, and her genuine feelings for Dakbar. Meanwhile a war for the Cardassian's soul is being waged internally.
Fascinating reveal that Dakbar did in fact throw the both of them off the cliff, only to change his mind midway down.
Author's Response: My favorite part of this whole section is the symbolism; particularly that in saving Rychel he's pierced her heart. The whole theme of the first part is Dakbar's fall, and how he's taken those he cares for along with him. Thanks for the feedback!
Date: 21 Oct 2014 00:39 Title: Cardassian Conundrum
Dakbar is playing s dangerous game here by trying to intimidate a fellow officer. Revealing himself the way he did was a risk, as was putting her through this mental excercise.
I think the tactic has worked for now, as I don't believe Reesa will turn on a fellow Cardassian, even if she is a half blood. But questions about the incident wIll likely not go away easily. Nor will it help making more enemies.
Author's Response: Dakbar is rapidly circling downwards in a dangerous way, and he's taking everyone around him along for the fall... literally and figuratively. The real question is whether or not he's ok with the amount of collateral damage he's causing.
Thanks again for the feedback :-D
Date: 19 Oct 2014 19:35 Title: Torn
Okay, some answers here. Dakbar did change his mind even if it was after the act. Is that enough to forgive him? I'm not so sure. Rychel's near devotional feelings for him remain dangerous. Is she so blinded by those feelings she's unable to realize what he did? Maybe she chooses not to remember.
At some point she will have to face reality and make a tough decision.
Date: 18 Oct 2014 18:30 Title: The Battle Within
Amnesia. How frustrating. I was hoping for a few answers but it looks like not yet. Perhaps not at all suprising that she can't remember the fall after those traumatic injuries. It's the brain protecting itself. A bit more curious that she can't even remember the trip to the planet. Well some of her memory appears to be coming back and so far it seems to be telling her that Dakbar is a hero. To be honest her entire judgment regarding him has been shaky at best. I'm going to wait until we get a full account of what happened on that mountain before making up my mind about him.
Terrific way in which to build the tension though.
Author's Response: Thanks :-D
For the longest time, I had Rychel's relationship status on the Talon site listed as "The thin line between love and Stockholm Syndrome." There is good in Dakbar... there is bad as well. Rychel places his well-being above her own, which will likely backfire in spectacular fashion.
Date: 18 Oct 2014 08:08 Title: The Battle Within
Wow, what an eye opener! Dakbar's having a battle with his inner demons, who sound a lot like the Prophets. Meanwhile, Rychel is far more spry than anyone gave her credit for so soon after major surgery.
And her last memory... what a doozy!
Author's Response: Yeah, the idea that the Prophets would test Dakbar was a great idea by Marian. I think it is particularly effective because we see a lot of bad with Dakbar, but not as much of his good side (which is buried in there... somewhere). Thanks for the feedback :-)
Date: 18 Oct 2014 00:47 Title: After the Fall
Cannot figure out what happend here? Did he change his mind at the last second but was it too late already and his only option was to place himself so he would soften her fall? Or was this truly some sort of accident? Whatever happened, this is going to be one hell of a conversation once they regain consciousness. Especially with her brother being around.
Author's Response: Most things will be revealed in time :-D
Date: 17 Oct 2014 17:02 Title: Angel, Angel, Down We Go Together
A nice little hiking trip appears to have been just what Rychel needed. Well, maybe not just a hiking trip.
Dakbar still remains heavily conflicted as he's unable to shake those dark thoughts about a woman he is apparently falling in love with. This is going to make one hell of a relationship. That is unless it all ends here.
Author's Response: I think as more about Dakbar's background is revealed, it will make a lot more sense. The darkness within him isn't a natural state, but more a survival mechanism.
Date: 16 Oct 2014 15:57 Title: The Doctor's Orders
Another twist I didn't expect. Rape on a Starfleet ship is almost unheard of. And I don't believe for a second that this was a random crime of opportunity nor that Roman is the true culprit. Something very odd is going on here and if nothing else, the incident with the CMO proves it.
Damn, Rychel really can't catch a break.
Author's Response: I think Talon's nickname should be Little Ship of Horrors, or as Sam suggested, the Ship of the Damned.
I think Star Trek is overly optimistic when it shows female characters getting captured or held against their will. Sure, those within Starfleet are unlikely to behave poorly, but rape is a fact of life for women when in close quarters with their opponents.
Date: 15 Oct 2014 20:46 Title: Confirmation
Alright, so I guess I was off with my initial suspicion. This seems to be related to her brother. At least we seem to have cleared up that this was not a dream and that Rychel is not crazy. Thats's something.
But now there is a threat on Talon and her life might be in danger. If only there was a security officer on board who could offer protection ...
Author's Response: Rychel is not crazy... yet :-D
