Had his sister been lost forever in a frozen sea of stars? Oh sob, that's just a bit too poetic that. A beautiful line that stuck out for me. It is a fasinating glimpse into a family scene which we rarely see in Trek and less so back at home and even less so only the family members with none of the heroes (well none at all really except Sarek and Amanda in TOS but it was on the Enterprise). So it was truly fascinating as we got a slice of civilian life and country life and simple family life.
But we saw a family sitting fragily waiting on news, any news, waiting and waiting, waiting for the calm to be destroyed for the horrid news to be delivered, waiting for their hopes to be dashed or waiting for their hopes to be realised. it's a painful, stressful, anxious time for them all and that is well related here - Seth is trying to be strong and silent and bear it for all sakes; Caye is bringing her family closer to home in order to circle the wagon, mother is retreating into prayer and despondency and fragile hopes, father is trying to play at normalacy and lose himself in it and Rory is unsure of what to do and needs to find something or some sort of answers from the immediate surrounds if they aren't going to be forthcoming from Starfleet about Maren.
And isn't it interesting to see a neat little nod to Challenger!? Worthy of my review #1500. ;)
Author's Response:
Yeah, sometimes I don't kill my darlings, I leave them in there to stick out like sore emo thumbs. ;-) Glad you found it beautiful, at least.
I can only imagine that this sort of thing happens all over the Federation given how often ships seem to go temporarily missing. Often, they turn up again, but sometimes they don't. And what with all the rumors of the Borg ... I'm sure the folks back home are terrified.
I'd like to do more with Maren's family and I think I'll have the opportunity with Year One. Of course, everyone will be much younger in those scenes. Maybe I'll do another short about her announcing her engagement or something. *wanders off to follow hopping plot bunny*

We don't get to see the side of the worried-sick Starfleet family at home very much. But I would expect that similar situations play out all the time all over the Federation.
The O'Conner's are an old fashioned and closely knit family, so the pain of not knowing what has happened to Maren is even more acute, especially for her mother.
Nicely done, shining a spotlight on a place we otherwise rarely see.

Loved this. Seth comes across as such a strong guy here, and he sees his sister in everyone of his family. He wants to know more, just like everyone else, and he worries, just like everyone else. All of them deal with it in their own way; some through prayer, some through work, but they all deal.
A well done exploration of this family and their dynamics; deep thoughts weaved flawlessly with dialogue. I'd like to see more of Seth wherever he shows up.
