Aw, Hank! God, I love that man, here when he's pretty much just barely out of boyhood, and still struggling to tell this woman he has it so bad for that he loves her. I like the atmosphere work in this one. Bethany probably had no clue whatsoever how close he came to summoning the nerve, and I can only imagine years later they'll discuss moments like this and wonder, "What if...?"
Author's Response:
What if indeed! If Hank had told her this then ... I don't know. The two were in such different places, though as we see as the years progress they draw closer together in terms of life experience. Bethany is just starting out here in her own adventure at the Academy and, honestly, I think if Hank had told her then what he was feeling it would have really thrown a wrench into their friendship. Trying to cross the line from "Friend" to "More than Friends" is a difficult thing. One I think the two of them would have attempted in good faith, but find that it just wouldn't work out. He got really close here. It would be the closest he would get for many years. Thanks for the review :)
