Great insight into Scotty through the eyes of a different character.

And unconditional love from family or friends is such a powerful thing, Boyce is spot on to believe that this young engineer has the support system to be able to deal with anything.

Author's Response: He is. Scotty so zealously protects his family there from being known of -- admittedly, a somewhat dysfunctional self-protection at the same time -- but aye, he has it. Thanks so much!

This reminds me quite a bit of one of the tighter hugs I ever got, every year, from the Camp Director where I went to a wilderness camp, in the 1970s.

In Bingham, Maine.

Maybe it's something about the ferocity of Maine itself.

Beautifully, lovingly rendered, as always.

Author's Response: Thank you. I think it must be Maine. XD

Phil Boyce FTW. Fantastic use of the good Doc here and such a lovely scene at the end, where Scotty is reunited with his family and just lets it all hang out as he only will with them.

Author's Response: I really kind of love Phil. And that whole crew.

Oh, my.  How gorgeous.  I love that LL Bean still exists; that made me grin.  And I loved Phil's reflections on aging and on Scott.  But especially, especially, I loved the ending.

There were no walls here. No pretenses, no reserve, no perfectionism or fear. Just something raw and primal, the kind of attachment that holds even restless souls back from a cliff's edge. Something pure and unfettered and joyful that made the burdens of life worth carrying.

This was his home, because these people were his home.

Perfection.

Author's Response: Thank you. ::bows:: I'm thoroughly glad it's held up in the four years since it was written.
