The making of Chief Scott. Of course, the making of him was in fact a long process and one borne by a number of people, among them Cait Barry. All of them, I think right up to Pike are going to be to the forefront of Scotty's mind as he seeks to prove them right in their faith in him. He never believed himself fit for it for a long time and now we see him ready and even willing to take on the task. Perhaps it is the last words of Cait that spurs him or an acknowledgement of all that he has gone through, survived and a faith in his own skills, but he catches himself even out as he talks through the problems and possible solutions to the engineering issues. He finds himself talking like the chief engineer. What was his natural place in the universe to all his fans has actually been a long winding road but here and now we see him reach it.

This was a wonderful look at the Enterprise pre-Kirk, and the interaction between Pike and Scotty. I, too have a soft spot for Pike - I think the character would have done every bit as well as Kirk, although with a much different style. Always a pleasure to get further insight into Scotty's backstory, for that's what I love reading and writing - finding those little gems that help us understand who these characters are, and why they became who they did. This certainly qualifies. :D
Author's Response: I have always felt, and still do, that Pike would forever be Scotty's captain, first and above all. For a lot of reasons, but the big one being that he'd never have made it to where he did if Pike (and a good chunk of Pike's senior staff!) hadn't actively worked on and with him to do it. Thank you for reading, and for commenting.

I'm so glad you added this to the archives. Rarely can a single short piece evoke so many different emotions. Sadness, anxiety, hope, pride. Pike's interaction with Scotty here is just golden, too. I love the way you write Pike as a Captain. Unwavering authority and command, with an underlying warmth and humor. Love it.
Author's Response: I think the more I write Chris Pike, the more I love him. Which is hard, because I already loved him. Thank you, so much.

Very well-written in spite of the fact that this was one of the weekly free-write, do-not-edit posts from the AA forums. I love these look-ins into Scotty's time as a lieutenant, and although I usually don't care for TOS stories, yours are one of the few that I do enjoy reading because I think you spend a lot of time working very hard on your characterizations. This hard work shows in your writing, even for a flash piece such as this one.
Author's Response: From you and your absolutely fabulous series, that is very high praise indeed. Thank you, very much.
