I absolutely love this, Mac.  We see Kirk's grief at the loss of his son, but Carol's is never touched on, or explored.  I think it's fitting that despite what happened, she can still see the great potential of Project Genesis if it is used as it was intended.  Possibly a way to carry on David's legacy?

I also like the nod that even though she isn't 'fleet, she'll use her knowledge to help protect citizens of the Federation and further the cause of the greater good.  How many scientists' brains were picked throughout history for just this reason?  A nice merging of Treklore and reality.

Real gut punch at the end there, I can just picture Doctor Marcus making that statement in the aftermath, the entire affair resumed in one sentence, In the end it cost me my son. Chilling! Very well done on all of these Mac!

Oh, Carol.

Of course she has an "after" that others do not. I feel you made it come to life.

Marcus is a tragic figure. She loses so much in TWoK and TSfS and it seems she doesn't even find love with Kirk afterwards. To lose her son is an unfathomable pain and anguish. To lose Genesis perhaps is not the same pain but her creation and that of David's was distorted, perverted into a weapon and then abandoned by Starfleet. All the good it could offer quashed by the possibilities of being used as a weapon.

Again, I like how you take a smaller canon character and make them so much more. And again I like how you make nods homages to the source material such as when Carol gives the line: The failure of the few cannot be held accountable by the fewer. A terrific feed of the infamous words spoken by Spock in TWoK.

Author's Response: Apparently Bibi Besch wanted to come back for Trek III and was initally told she would but then the script sort of squeezed Carol out and then there was the original Star Trek VI (Starfleet Academy) idea where we see Kirk in bed with her at the start and revisiting his past. In short: if we had seen that Carol might've had some flesh to her meagre bones. I've always been attracted to her character and so pluck her, like Kamarag, from obscurity. I always do source material nods :) Watching Trek II-III-IV endlessly as a kid has ruined me.

Poor Carol.  This is a heartbreaking introspection her part into her own choices and what they've wrought.  Still, ever the scientist, she clings to her dream and her ambition.  Great addition to a nice pile of ficlets.  :)

Author's Response: many thanks, Kes. I pictured it as like the proposal in TWOK but perhaps with hope of it coming back, Genesis.

I can't help but think about her work being used to terraform Klingon worlds after the explosion on Praxis. Really excellent work. Carol breaks my heart.

Author's Response: Funnily, in one of the Myriad Universe novel stories ("The Chimes at Midnight")the Federation uses the Genesis torpedo on Praxis. I've read the first two John Vornholt Genesis Wave novels but think that Genesis could be tapped again. As for Carol, like Beverly, there is much more to her than what we see or saw on screen. My thanks for reading :)
