A nice little glimpse into the birth of David, and Carol Marcus' mindset at the time. Nice to see her surrounded by family at that time, even if Kirk wasn't there. Nicely done.

Wow. Having been there, it's definitely an emotional time (though I would like to point out a correction: babies that wee don't have the coordination to reach quite, so much as flail their little fists), and I could see how Carol could feel so vulnerable, and wistful, and longing.
Author's Response: I should've known that saying my mum found my baby book in which I commented my first focus on her was not for a month after my birth. Apologies.

Sad little piece. How disorienting, to see the face of your newborn child and see the person with whom you created him, and yet not have that person there ... whatever the reason.
Author's Response: I'm trying to do more Carol. Carol/Kirk has intrigued me since I first saw TWOK as a six year-old. Who was this woman to have such a moment with the man I idolised? I think...I think Carol wished Kirk was there always if he had not been a Starfleet man.

Well, maybe it's the needs of the two.
But Starfleet does that to people, eh? It seems like it can really chew them up and spit them out. Hard to say what the better choice is -
* no personal life, live and die alone on ship
* personal life and family on ship, all in peril when in battle and family can be completely wiped out in an instant
* kids off ship but parents together, so one torpedo can leave the kids orphans but at least the couple is together
* kids off ship and parents on separate ships, so everyone misses each other or
* kids off ship with one parent and the other aboard, so one parent is essentially a single parent and may become resentful
I'm not sure what the best choice is. Hard to say what would have been better for Carol, or David, in the long run.
Author's Response: I think if Carol had been in Starfleet still (Memory Beta claims she was in Starfleet at one stage) she might've seen things differently but she wanted her own life. Nothing would've been safe and ultimately, her friends were murdered on a space station and her son murdered on a strange new world. Kirk...failed.
