This rocked, jespah.  Romance and braining aliens with frying pans.  It doesn't get any better than that. ;-)

But seriously, it's always interesting to see members of the crew that we don't think of in traditional combat roles take on that task.  Nicely done.  I wish my earliest efforts had been anywhere near this good. :-)

Author's Response:

Aw, thank you (and I am humbled; this really is an oldie). I stole the frying pan versus aliens thing for Lili, who doesn't just wound an Insectoid but really smooshes the big bug.

I love the below decks and like to give them some screen time (God knows they rarely get it for real).

That is a surprisingly darling, straight-forward little tale. Will is all kinds of adorably oblivious as he works in the kitchen, and Naomi seems to be a bit of a kindred spirit. Not sure how someone can spend a week unconscious from a concussion, but the wakeup was certainly sweet and I like the fact it was the two supposedly 'not as important' people who saved the day here.

Author's Response:

I adore below decks characters (probably why my fiction is so loaded with them). The Nx-01 had something like 85 people. We saw 7 reliably, plus another 7 or so irregularly and we saw a few of the MACOs during the third season. And that was it! But big ships are run by people who chop the onions and grow the plants and clean the carpets, just as much as by the people who fire the torpedoes and sit in the big chair.

Many thanks for reading!

No way really? Well I always think that short stories are perhaps the hardest thing to get right. This had all the right measure of pacing and character focus and enough plot condensed into the short story format and limited focus thereon allowed by the role of the chef. So to me, that's a very accomplished beginning to any bit of writing - and even more striking then that you took a nameless and faceless character from ENT to explore. Kudos. And I look forward to the day.

Author's Response:

You're very kind. But yeah, I confess, this one is from 2005.

Aw, I wasn't expecting the little romance to bloom there. That's a sweet ending for sure and I liked the quick pace of this short story. Succinct but a big ole window onto the canon elusive Chef. Nice to see him get a little personality and a story of his own. And when the kitchen got too hot he stepped up to the plate rightly. Sorta like the Steven Segal movie but with a character with charm and heart. (P.S. the start with the roast chicken got me good and hungry)

Author's Response:

Whenever we have an Ad Astra Con, I vow that I will cook. Chef's recipe is how I make roast chicken at home.

And, thank you! This is one of the first fan fiction stories I ever wrote.

Awww. I love a good Chef story. Especially a Chef story where he saves the ship using his awesome ninja Chef skills. That's why Archer kept him aboard ;)

Author's Response:

Ninja Chef!

I am pretty sure this is the first fan fic I ever wrote. I replaced the Botanist later (er, sorry, Naomi); it was originally a one-off. Kitchens are skeery places.

Iron Chef!
