Entertaining piece, certainly different to the overall field. Good one, Rice.

Author's Response: Pieces of the Star Trek Universe outside of Starfleet have always been lacking. The rare opportunity we see stuff outside of Starfleet it seems to be people up to no good. I thought it would be good to introduce a character who doesn't have much use for Starfleet but isn't a bad guy.

Chao is definitely an interesting character.  It was fun to see these four disparate individuals come together and work successfully toward a goal - even if each had their own reasons for doing so.

This also had a slight Firefly feel to it IMHO; it'll be interesting to see if Chao rounds up the group for other missions in the future.  Nice story.

Author's Response: I've felt for some time that Trek is missing a heroic smuggler type. A Firefly/ Han Solo type.

Your first story! Your first challenge! Your first review! W00t! W00t!

Chao's a funky character. The whole thing had a bit of an A-Team feel to it, where disparate characters were brought together because of their talents, but they wouldn't normally work together.

Some things seemed overly convenient, e. g. the medical mentor just so happening to be one of the freed hostages (and was well enough to take over healing duties), the appearance changes always went off without a hitch, etc.

Good to see this isn't the last of Chao ....

Author's Response: A-Team? It must be my teenage years in the 80's coming out. I figured Arrissa was sweet on a Bajoran boy whose papa was a doctor. I'm still getting to know these characters.
