Sweet and semi-hopeful ending, but managing a crew for the rest of their lives isn't easy.

And maybe it'll be a series. ;)

Well done!

Author's Response: thanks very much for reading, Jesph. Much appreciated. Maybe a series, the second instalment's been stalled dead for ages. Thanks again for reading and no, life won't be easy for the 430 but there's hope.

I think this may have been what Janeway did? Truly, I don't know.

But the destruction of the array makes sense, at least in the sense that the Kazon would have owned it and perverted its usage. Even keeping it around was no guarantee that it would work or that Spock, etc. would have ever been able to figure out how to get home.

And then - whaddaya do? It can, I am sure, feel rather hopeless to be stuck out there.

Author's Response: Janeway did this. It seemed right to keep the Enterprise in the Delta Quadrant for this AU. Still, it was also out of principal for Kirk to stop the Kazon no matter what.

The whole setup is crashing down - I take it the Caretaker is ill. Or maybe the opened passageway is a problem, and the Kazon are doing something to the Caretaker?

Author's Response: The Caretaker was meant to be dying, he was searching for a mate which was why he was pulling ships from Alpha Quadrant etc. The Kazon...wanted his power. Somehow I didn't understand it much at the time :)

I don't know much about Voyager's pilot although I do know it references a catetaker, Kazons and the Ocampa. After that - no clue.

So I am learning a bit about it from your story. Eerie, creepy and very, very alien.

And very well realized!

Author's Response: Most kind. It was a while since I saw Caretaker when I wrote this and I tend to steer away from Voyager now so you're in some form of hands at least :)

Uh oh. Beware of holographic projections bearing gifts.

I don't like the looks of this, not one bit.

Nice Mack.  I'll freely admit to knowing nothing at all about the origin story for VOY, but the actions of the TOS crew in this were spot on, right down to Kirk's two-footed lunge at the Kazon, and his decision at the end.  While it took a while to get to the 'decision' part of this story, it was classic Kirk and exactly how he would behave.  Well done, sir.

Author's Response: My blushing thanks. First of all, that two footed lunge I always think of "Spectre of the Gun" when they go to face off the bad guys and Kirk just runs at Wyatt Earp and hits him with the lunge. Second best is "Tomorrow is Yesterday" Kirk always seemed to do it for no real reason other than to look cool :) I don't think there was any easy or short way to get to the decision. It took less than the actual episode. I tried to explain it for those not familar with VOY and shaved some bits down. No Maquis for one. My thanks as always.

I must say, at least Kirk was a little more consistent in violating the Prime Directive than Janeway was. Props to you!

Author's Response: He does his best. Thanks for the comment indeedy

Interesting.

I don't know the VOY pilot although I take it the story was based upon that.

Everything pivots on two decisions (and that's what I was looking for with the prompt - the pivoting). One is for Kirk to destroy the array. The other is for the Caretaker to grab 'em in the first place.

Cries out for a sequel.

Author's Response: thanks Jespah. I confess to taking a gamble concerning knowledge of the VOY pilot but hoped I did enough to try and explain the plot. I modified it in places (chiefly no major characters killed off like the first officer etc) but I admit to seeing future episodes like the Equinox, Kazon, Phage. Voyager but better.

So, the history repeated itself, even though not in the exactly the same way.

And there was way more fighting, Kirk-style fighting, then in the VOY episode. I especially remember that jump on the Kazon guy and Kirk hitting him with his feet on the chest. Very Kirkish :)

Author's Response: Somehow I couldn't see Kirk getting out of that without some Kirk fighting. Shatner managed to crowbar it in sometimes :) my thanks for reading.

An interesting setting. I wonder whether Kirk makes the same choice Janeway did...and something tells me he is not going to.
