Author's Response: Yes, the Picard/Jack Crusher pairing is a VERY bittersweet one indeed. And a sad one, too. I didn't know that soldiers actually DO this - wow! I didn't copy the idea from anywhere this time, lol! (Damn. There I was, thinking I was being original for once, lol!) Jean-Luc is a Starfleet officer so that he can explore BUT also protect if necessary. Absolutely.

Ohhh how bittersweet.
It reminds me a little of soldiers going off to war with their sweetheart's picture or handkerchief or the like in their breast pocket. Just a little something to remind them of what they're fighting for.
For Jean-Luc, it's what he's doing it all for, yes? For anyone he's ever cared about, or ever will.
