I loved the conversation between McCoy and Spock about the mind-link. You do a great job showing McCoy's gift of being nosy and minding his own business at the same time, and invoking Spock's loyalty to Jim as a means of forcing for Spock to take care of himself. There was so much insight and emotional truth in your presentation of these friendships; I was very impressed and moved.

That's about the best praise I could get. This unconventional friendship between the three has fascinated and captivated me since I was a child. And I'll have to thank the Great Bird of the Galaxy for that - he created them, I just get to play with them now and again. ;-)

The first scene with Spock and McCoy was perfect--so deeply in character for them as individuals and in their odd friendship. There was a lot of really good Spock-McCoy interaction in this whole chapter, in fact. It's so interesting to me that Spock is focused on Jim, but McCoy on both of them...and he doesn't feel jealous or slighted by the stronger friendship. A true friend, and you communicated that so well.

And again, thanks for the vote of confidence. Writing Spock-McCoy interactions can be a tricky thing, so glad to know it rang true.
LOL!! The best example of this is when Kirk announces in TWOK that he and McCoy (along with a few other people) will be beaming over to the Regula I space station. Right in front of McCoy Spock says, "Jim, be careful." McCoy shoots Spock a look that could fell the average man at ten paces and quips, "We will." Classic stuff IMHO. ;-)

Best line: "Usually when Jim was in danger, Spock was like a caged tiger, pacing, plotting, smoke practically pouring out of his ears as the Vulcan worked to find a solution, a way to get to and protect his captain."
So far you've set up a completely engrossing and believable story...lots of good tension and conflict, and much of it generated by our men's loyalty to each other. Well done!

So - it's unresolved whether there is actually the potential for a problem (or, at least, it's unresolved in McCoy's head). Will you be revisiting this?

The problem becomes evident in 'Six Degrees of Separation,' and leads to the rift that drives the three of them apart at the end of the 5-year mission. I realize I'm going about this all wrong, but these aren't being written in chronological order (the stories are listed in the correct order in my profile). Most of the big pieces are already in place, and I'm going back and filling in the cracks as ideas come to me. ;-)

McCoy does have a bad habit of arguing about things that really shouldn't be an issue at the most inopportune times. ;-) I can be a little more forgiving of Kirk in this instance - he really isn't operating on all thrusters at the moment...
