I love the richness of the details here; the handwritten letter, the insight into McCoy's divorce, which seems incredibly bitter and very unfair. One would hope that kind of thing would have changed by then, but humans are humans and we are often messy creatures, emotionally speaking. Still, you write McCoy very well; his nostalgia about a coffee mug or his heartaching yearning to be closer to his daughter than life's allowed him to be.

I do hope he gets his house back, admittedly. XD I like how he reacted to the Yeoman, who clearly had a crush on one Captain Kirk, and I like his frustration being painted in about the new nurses.

Ultimately, though, you really captured the tone of what makes Len McCoy who he is. One large part southern gentleman, but also far more canny and clever and advanced than his old country doctor mannerisms would suggest. Well done!

Author's Response: thank you Steff, I blush with such praise. I can only do so much with Bones, I think LBD has the corner on the soul of him but I try my bit. Always saw him as this gentle, well, nice man and that he wouldn't want to lose his daughter regardless of his ex-wife. I think part of me is always influenced by the books but chiefly LA Graf's Traitor Winds where Bones comes to the rescue with some grumbles but does his bit in the end. As for Simmons, she's my irregular regular and classic yeoman for TOS I suppose :)

This is a piece of McCoy's life I don't know a lot about, but I bet he's a good dad. It was a poignant story, thank you.

Author's Response: My thanks indeed. I always imagine McCoy was a good father and tries to be but being on a starship far from home doesn't help nor his ex-wife. Until writing this I had really only read about it in Michael Jan Friedman's "Shadows on the Sun"

McCoy being silent and reflective - now there's a first! LOL. Again, very sweet picturing of McCoy here. The blustering verboise doc is lacking the sparring dialogue but instead is involved in his joy of learning he is to become a granddad. I can picture the crackly smile of the southern gent easily.

Author's Response: Lumme, my thanks MF. Writing McCoy can be fine. The quickfire retorts and all the rest. Scratching beneath the surface is a joy.

A nice companion piece to 'A Tale of a Captain,' and a nice look into some background on McCoy.  I really wish Joanna and Jocelyn had made it into the series - they each bring elements which not only enrich the McCoy character, but help us to understand a little more about the personal demons he struggles with.

And despite the gruff exterior he loves to present, he really is a softie - as you illustrated so wonderfully here as he reflects on what will be a life-altering experience for his little girl.  Again, a very nice window into the off-duty side of the Enterprise's CMO.

Author's Response: thank you very much LBD. Writing 'beyond the episodes' is something I like doing especially TOS. McCoy's a decent soul really, that old Southern charm. :)
