The valerians you say? As my mother used to say, the thought plickens...
There's more to these pirates than meets the scanner and the mention of valerians should cause Leva's ears to prick up (so to speak) as he was no doubt aware of Eagle's mission. He will have to adapt quickly to protect his new crew.
Nice dovetail with the A storyline.
Thanks!! rbs
Author's Response: For now, as far as Leva is concerned, this is likely merely coincidence as the Sacajawea is operating in the same sector as Eagle and trading activity would likely involve all the major/minor powers in the area. But I agree, he should take note.

Well, Mahoney goes from one extreme to the other - he is inebriated by his improved standing and newly gained self-respect. However, there are far too many possible intricacies and he does not seem to have given the matter the due consideration. Leva is cautious about plunging into darkness but everybody on the ship wants adventures and glory. I am pretty sure they will have them. But they might taste bitter.
Author's Response: Yeah, be carful what you wish for, right? At least Leva can appreciate the dangers of working under a man with such severe mood swings.

Mahoney’s unstable, veering between apathy and hyper-aggression, and poor Leva’s having to walk a very thin line between this mercurial captain and the rest of the crew. One wonders how new Ben Maxwell’s XO was during the fiasco along the Cardassian border… and how hard he/she might have tried to steer that veteran captain away from the edge of the abyss.
Author's Response: The Ben Maxwell episode is an excellent comparison and not one I believe I was consciously aware of when penning the Mahoney/Leva plot. One can only imagine that the situation on the Phoenix developed in a similar manner at first. Maxwell's XO was either fully on board with his captain's plan from the beginning or entirely helpless to stop him later on. Leva does not have much command experience and might find himself in as much trouble as the Phoenix's first officer may have been. Then again, things might develop in a much different way here. Stay tuned.
