And nothing like a little military discipline in an organization that is historically uncomfortable with the military side of its role. Your characters are very distinct and individual - particularly your leads.
Nice character development on Star as well as Nora. Assigning an officer as a watcher is bound to go over well with someone who doesn't like being interfered with. I have an instinct that Clancy is going to turn out to be very helpful in spite of his inauspicous introduction.
Thanks! rbs
Author's Response: Also, always fun to have a character whip others into shape. Eagle is a fairly lax ship thanks to Owens' mostly non-authoritarian leadership style, but sometimes that's simply not good enough. Especially for a hard-nosed warrior type like Nora Laas. I'm glad you're enjoying the character development in this story. Unsurprisingly, Nora and Star were a big focus point for me here.

Oh nooo. Could that have gone worse. If this is Star's way of trying to be helpful and contribute she badly miscalculated and misjudged Nora Laas. Mind, it might well have been a deliberate undermining tactic. I wouldn't put it past Star. That said, it has a certain ring of being a thing Star might do to appear executive officer material and to show she's made of the right stuff. Sadly, I think any help or assistance from Star is only going to be seen as interference by Nora.
I like how you show the murder has shaken Nora and demonstrate how she is out of her comfort zone. She's tetchy and on edge, and very sharp with her department. Normally, she runs a tight and well oiled department but the situation has gotten to her. Also might whatever be afflicting Owens have some impact on Nora too? Liking the development of the murder investigation and the fact you spend time on the characters and their development.
Author's Response: Okay, I admit it. Nora is one of my favorites, especially in this story. She's so raw and intense and really all heart and emotion. I agree that it may not have been incredibly tactful for Star to simply insert Clancy without telling anyone first. But she may be as blinded by their common hostility as Nora. It's probably wearing off on her.

Oh. Oh. Oh. Nora is about to tear Star a new one. A big, nasty, new one. She's in a mood and the stress of the situation, the pressure she's putting on herself, is getting to her. Clearly. She's right to focus her people on the job but her temper has become hair-trigger and it looks like things are about to get rough.
I like.
Author's Response: But is she right to be so angry about this, considering her self-admited weakness? No matter, clearly the woman is seeing red and needs to speak/shout her mind pronto. Fists hopefully won't be part of it.
