Nice exploration of Nora's inner insecurities. Also very nice crime-solving procedure - scanning the scene for later reproduction in the holodeck. It's not just for recreation anymore.

I think the series overused the holodeck for recreation and underused them for science. Very nice to see them used this way.

Also a good call on the poor procedure used when turning off the internal sensors. The chief of security should be the first notified. That's an oversight on the part of the 1st officer. And I knew that was going to bite them in the blubber...

Thanks! rbs

Author's Response: Holodecks just have so many possible applications, right? Way more than we have likely seen on screen. It certainly makes perfect sense for a criminal investigation. It's actually a bit surprising that Nora actually thought of this considering her shortcomings in this field. I suppose it's in the rule book on how to deal with violent crimes as a Starfleet security officer.

Nora Laas is a fascinating character. It is terrific to pit her against this kind of challenge because she's a born fighter (well life experiences shaped her as a fighter) but that's her stregeth. It's been her mindset in her job - pick a fight and win the fight. Now she is faced with solving the riddle of this mystery. Not exactly her experience or strength. And likewise, she can see she's made mistakes in having such a gap in her own profile and that of her department. It's going to be a tough old challenge for her and she's to be commended for being tenacious and stubborn in her planned pursuit. However, is she being neglectful in lieu of being spiteful of Star? Should she perhaps have given the investigation over to the XO no matter her feelings given her own realisation of ability or suitablity?

Author's Response: I think it may make Nora Laas a little more endearing. The fact that she has such clear weaknesses. But regardless, she's an officer who wants to get the job done at any cost and has the confidence that she will. I can't see a scenario in which she would have simply let Star take over and perhaps her pride will be her downfall.

Superb look at Nora's thought process here. Like how she's aware that her investigative skills are not great, but she's gonna press on and rock out anyway. I admire that.

Author's Response: I think it was quite important to make clear that yeah, Nora is the chief of security and yes, she's the lead investigator but truthfully most Starfleet security officers aren't trained to investigate murder cases. Especially not on a starships. And while Nora is an awesome fighter, her greatest weakness is that she lacks patience and finesse. Hell, she ain't even a tactical officer, really.
