Alright! Maybe lump the scenes chronologically closest to each other in the correct order? Maybe?

Coming back to this mini-chapter, I'm glad Seven is quite reasonable with Maren, because from what I've seen in VOY episodes. Seven tended to be a little bit too overbearing, motherly and protective of Icheb and I would imagine even more so if Icheb were dating someone.

One question I would like to ask is this; does your Seven of Nine still wear those catsuits?

This has to be incredibly awkward for Seven to act and feel maternally towards Icheb, given that they were both drones of the same slave mind. And now Seven has to play the role of cautious, supportive mother, without the emotional tools necessary for the task.

Looks like she'll have to make it up as she goes along...

Author's Response:

Yes, Seven is winging it, with a little help from The Doctor's ongoing 'training' (God help her, as we all know he was probably the last person who should have been giving lessons on human interaction).  She's trying hard do do right by Icheb.

An awkward 'meet the parents' moment, indeed.  The sparseness and lack of warmth (save for the picture of the VOY crew) had to be indtimidating for Maren.  But it's obvious that both women love Icheb, and you conveyed that subtly, yet beautifully.

Author's Response:

Intimidating, yes, but also not completely unexpected.  Icheb's dorm room isn't exactly cluttered with stuffed bunny rabbits and framed photos, either.  ;-)  Maren's getting used to a different kind of normal.

Yes, they both love him.  Thanks for the comment!

Great description of Seven's apartment, I can well imagine this is what it would be like. You also continue to describe Marin's feelings both for Icheb and about the situation in a very real way. Look forward to reading more!

Author's Response:

Thank you, CS!

Wow, that awesome awkward pause when everyone is in the room staring at one another. I love it. Even better is that first awkward moment where you're ALONE with the parents because significant other went to do something else. lol

Also, you have got Seven's voice pretty perfect; it was easy to hear her saying the lines as you described it. So awesome to have that kind of insight, especially with a canon character.

Author's Response:

Thanks, TS!  I do stress a little about nailing down the more developed canon characters, so I'm glad you approve of my handling of Seven.

As for the first moment alone with Seven ... *shudder*  ;-)

Not quite your average meet the parents judging by the end but it remains quite something and further light, for me, on Icheb et al.

Author's Response:

Ha, yeah, can you even imagine?  Bad enough to meet the parents ... worse still when 'Mom' is Seven of Nine.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!  :)

Bam! And cue the reason to be nervous - not so much just being able to make a good impression on Seven but because she can in one sentence floor a person with her statements or question. She pulls the rug out from under Maren like nobody's business. Just as to be expected from Seven. Perfect.

Likewise perfect is the depiction of love shown between Icheb and Maren because its expressed through engineering theories and praise of her work. So clear he has a truly high opinion of Maren.

And of course, Seven's question though out of the blue is only to be expected and shows her own depth of feeling nad concern for icheb. Very touching and humanising and feels very true to Seven and Icheb and a true gold nugget from VOY was seeing little moments like this and now more gold nuggets as Tess continues that.

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for the review!  Seven always did have a way of cutting right to the chase, especially when things matter, as Icheb does, to her.

Maren will have to prove to Seven that they're on the same team -- both of them caring for and wanting the best for Icheb.

Ah, and now we get to the nugget of the interaction.

I like how their small talk isn't sports teams or the weather; it's engineering.

Author's Response:

These three don't have time for irrelevancies like sports and sunshine.  ;-)

Really, engineering is Maren's whole world right now as a student, and that's where she and Icheb met, so it's a natural safe space for them to talk.  Seven is a wealth of information aside from being Icheb's 'family,' so Maren's definitely hoping to make a good impression.

Oh, quite a question. I can't wait to see the answer. :)

Author's Response:

You didn't have to wait long.  :)  Answer's up.

Wow, Seven's apartment is ... Seven. Sparse. Efficient. But the Voyager family picture is precious. I'm glad she has that so prominently displayed. The dynamic between the three is filled with that "meet the parents" awkwardness but boy it warm up when we talk engineering stuff. As you would expect between all three.

And then Seven goes and brings up the Academy hassles and puts poor Maren on the spot. I'm hoping Icheb has a save ready just in case Maren can't come up with something. But I'm thinking Maren might just be brutally honest here and tell Seven what she REALLY thinks about those Academy dicks. I hope she does.

Thanks for the review, TF!

Oh, man. Seven pulls like, no punches. She ends up cutting right through the pleasantries, which is very in character for her. I love how Maren's trying so hard to make a good impression. And Icheb is so clearly in love with her; it's never screamed out, but it's so obvious. I can't wait to see if there's more to come of this.

Author's Response:

Seven tried to be good, she really did.  She's just not built for bullshitting.  Thanks for the review!
