So now we get our first look at Hank next command the USS Pearl, Interesting thinking by Starfleet to upgrade the ambassador class design and build a new series in gleaming white as a symbol to all.
Was good to see Admiral bickering clearly upset about the sabotage of the Enterprise and the Maxwell mystery. Typical Admiral bureaucracies you can’t have your first choice and how dare you stand up to us.
Well I’m glad Hank got the walker brothers but the nature of this briefing does suggest Starfleet admiralty knows more than it briefing Hank on.
Still we know for all his faults he is the man for the Job.

You have got to love the first glimpse of a brand new ship and that love at first sight reaction from her new captain. I recently watched The Motion Picture with my wife and no matter the faults some people find with that movie, you have to admit that the scene where Scotty flies Kirk around the refitted Enterprise captures this feeling perfectly. And you have managed to do that as well here as Hank discovers the Pearl. I love the Enterprise C design and think it is great that you have decided to resurrect her here in your story.
From that moment of beauty, though, we find ourselves in a much less pleasant situation. The attack on the Enterprise was nicely revealed and a great way of ramping up the tension. That is only increased as we see these two admirals going at it like two alpha males in a pack.
You nicely set up the complications that Hank is going to be facing, while also developping his character by showing us that he is not scared of going up against an admiral or two to get what he thinks he needs. Still, it looks like he is going to have to put up with some interference, even if it comes from those admirals who seem to be on his side.
A nice follow up to the last chapter, look forward to some more.

Wow I've taken a look at some pictures of the Ambassador-class and she is a beauty! So nice use of a ship already shown in canon! And I have finally found a member of Starfleet who is even more of a jerk than captain Jellico (from the TNG episode Chain of Command)!
I'm also wondering if Bethany will feature as a member of the senior staff of Hank's new command?

Love the descriptions of the Pearl. Sounds like a beautiful ship.
Also really liked the interactions between the Admirals. It's always fun when there's friction.
It ws good to learn more about Hank here, as well. He's quite young, and a little brash! It will be interesting to see how he develops.
Author's Response:
Yes, the Pearl is a beauty of a shif and the admirals are fracus all their own. As we'll see, Hank starts out brash and young, but by the end of the book he has himself a new view of things.

A complicated mission to track down Maxwell and discover who or what is behind the death of all those Cardassians would be enough for anyone.
Hank Harrison has to contend with a new ship - a beauty and a testament to new technology by all means - but new ships can have teething problems. But I think Hank's biggest problems will lie with assembling a crew on such a short notice. This is especially compounded by interference and venom from certain quarters within the Admiralty.
I await to see what Hank has done to justify such resentments.
The Pearl sounds a beauty and has a touch of class and elegance about her that should stand to the crew and her Captain.
The challenge awaits Hank and whether he can step up from his lowly science vessel command to a bigger chair with bigger chanllenges and stakes.

Ouch! And the intrigue is building up! Great increase in tension, you write it so well. And I just loved the description of the Pearl! I can tell she's a beauty even from here. ;-) Very hooking chapter. On I go...;-)
