Was good to show Hank is still trying to learn his new crew names and that he the sort of captain that not knowing that bothers him.
I did find your flashback scene a very Interesting scene for Hank with his former captain, does explain a lot about Hank influences and views on command.
Interesting to see how Hank’s Senior Officers responded to the mission briefing and how hank let Nick do the discipline action when they get out of line.
Still good to see Hank know how to show his bridge crew that he has a sense of humor and wants his officers to be part by asking for choice of music, I do wonder what the junior officers make of him after launching to Flirtin’ with Disaster though.
Excellent chapter as usual for you.

Well Hank seems to have earned the respect of the senior officers (aside from Nick who is his friend) rather quickly plus Hank does not seem so aloof and detached as other captains. Hank is definitely of the mould of Sisko, possibly Janeway, and I have a sneaking suspicion that our new chief of operations officer is going to be Bethany (so maybe some steamy romance is in the cards?)...
'Go for it.' is that Hank's equivalent of Picard's 'Make it so!? That phrase of Hank's sounds in character but I think it will take some time for me to warm up to that catchphrase.
And finally we are off in no less than five chapters and several thousand words!

"Flirtin' with Disaster" seems like the kind of song the superstitious among the crew might want to avoid. Why do I think the title is prescient?
Interesting to see the dynamics of this new, haphazard crew. Continued goodness.
Author's Response:
Yep-needed a good jam to leave dock with and this song fit the mood and the end of the book...so why not, right?

Heck what a way to depart. Hank might get on with a certain rock guitar playing captain I know, no wait McGregor never gets on with anyone. But I like Hank's style and the first steps in a crew trying to gel. Nicely done. It's not one big happy family but nor is it a broken home.
However, we're again reminded of the terrible facts that await them at New Haven and the mystery that is in store sure is a puzzler. And one that could end badly for all. Nice balanced chapter with a novel departure. [McGregor oly ever plays his guitar on a quiet shift and would never afford a departure any ceremony or pomp]. Hank is an all round nice guy - just some issues to work out himself.

The flashback was very touchingly done. Seriously, so far this is just an excellent story. Hank's thoughts as he goes through this first day of command on his new ship is very realistic, and you paint a vivid picture of what the ship looks and feels like. The ending of Chapter 5 made me laugh out loud -- what better way to send off a somewhat diamond-in-the-rough crew than with rock'n'roll? Because that's what I would have chosen myself.

::cackles:: I think it's the first ever Starfleet vessel to have such a *rocky* launch. :-D This story rocks! ;-)
