Very rapid personal growth for Ramirez under fire.
Very intriguing device that protected the Gibralter - perhaps a beneficent side-effect of some nefarious attack? There's the tease into the rest of the story. There's more going on here than just anachornistic cardassians taking on Star Fleet for old times' sake.
Thanks!! rbs
Author's Response:
Indeed. Strange things are afoot on and around Lakesh.

I really admire your ability to still include a lot of detail without detracting from the "urgency" of the story. I also enjoy the fact that there is chaos from every angle: on the planet, on the Phoenix, in Sickbay, and among the engineers. Clearly Sandhurst is getting a baptism by fire.
It looks like Ramirez is the next to end up in that boat. I can only imagine the expression on her face right about now.

I almost cried...I am so very angry and heartbroken by this plague you've created. PLEASE tell me there is some happy ending for that crew (well, DON'T tell me, but you know what I mean.) UGGH!
Author's Response:
The neuropathogen is a truly terrifying weapon, being as its so much more sinister that simply killing someone outright.

Gosh things are really messed up on Lakesh. Cardassians killing Cardassians, I'm surprised the Federation just doesn't pull out of Cardassian territory and let the Cardassians fight it out. I say this because the Cardassian extremists you write about don't seem to care if their people get killed or not (especially the ones who have 'sided' with the Federation). I also wonder if that pathogen causes permanent nerve damage to all the people it affects; if so I feel really sorry for the crew of the Phoenix. One day you're a Starfleet officer, the next you are dependent on life support for the rest of your life. Heavy man.
Author's Response:
The damage caused by the insurgent pathogen is permanent, barring Starfleet Medical conjuring up any miracle cures (which is unlikely). And things are about to get even more delicate, politically speaking...

Wow, just completed a read through of three chapters in one go. Excellent story and well written. Well up there in my opinion as the best of Star Trek: fan fic and cannon. Can't wait to read more.
Author's Response:
Much obliged for the kind words, David. I'm pleased you're enjoying the story so much. There's a lot of action left to go.

I like Ramirez’ frustration with the circumstances as she puts it in the context of her life and aspirations. She's fast becoming one of my favorite characters in your series. And now she's got a command.
Good luck, Ramirez!
Author's Response:
Thanks for reading and commenting... and as for the luck, thanks again, she's going to need it.

Sorry it has taken me so long to read more of this! However, what a great chapter to pick up on again! The fact that all of the people from Phoenix are stuck in some kind of paralysis is terrifying, and the fact that Ramirez is now assigned as acting CO of the ship is a great twist at the end!
Excellence!
Author's Response:
Thank you. : ) Ramirez has always wanted a command of her own, though not necessarily under these circumstances. And the new Cardassian insurgent weapon is terrifying indeed, most especially to its victims.

That bio-weapon is some horrifying stuff.
Author's Response:
It is indeed.

Plots within plots. I'm extremely curious about the device siphoning power that inadvertently saved the Gibraltar crew from sharing the fate of their Phoenix counterparts.
The Cardassian insurgents are chilling and well written. I had to laugh about the dirty rifle barrel. In a world where energy weapons are standard, I can see people making that mistake, but it's a bad one to make!

"Their autonomic systems continued to function. Heartbeat, respiration, digestion all uninterrupted by the viral contagion visited upon them. But all neural paths to their voluntary muscle groups had been destroyed by the pathogen. They were unable to move their heads or limbs, their eyes could not focus, they could not speak."
Oh, shit. Man, talk about pulling no punches and no honor in warfare.
Author's Response:
The insurgents are utilizing asymmetrical warfare in its most savage form, and the more casualties they cause, the better. I thought there was a definite creepiness factor in the design of that weapon.

It's official. Ramirez Rocks.
Author's Response:
I think so, too. :-D
