I like Sandhurst's error and quick self-correction. Good verisimilitude. Lar'ragos is similar to a character I created - Investigator Lynhart Shran. Except Lenny's an old man with a heart condition. And an andorian revolver. Never a good idea to rely exclusively on energy weapons.

Fun mix of characters - tellerite characters are never-ending buckets of fun. Looking forward to more Tark.

Thanks! rbs

I like this Jonin character. It's interesting to see other ship's crew looking down on Sandhurst... you wouldn't see any Lieutenant say no to a Kirk, Picard, or even a Sisko or Janeway.

I really enjoyed the glimpse insidge Sandhurst's head on the bridge. Doubt, trepidation, fear... these are things we rarely see in Captains. But even those with the longest of legacies is human at heart!

Can't wait to see how everyone works their ways out of this one!

That was an incredible way of describing the El-Aurian's abilities...I might have to utilize that in the future, lol. And so far, I've been really enjoying the scenes leading up to this so far, as far as the ground battle. It looks as if the crew is beginning to not only come together quite handily, but also learning very quickly to rely on each other's abilities. Now, I think I'm just worried about the Doc... :(

Author's Response:

I'm pleased you enjoyed that segment. The conversation between Ramirez and Lar'ragos was great fun to write.

Ho ho! I didn't realise Lar’ragos was part of Guinan's race! That explains Lar'ragos' comments on serving as a soldier for some empire 400 years ago.

Author's Response:

Yes, Lar'ragos is a Listener of Guinan's El Aurian species.  He's quite a bit older than he appears, and a good deal more dangerous than he appears as well.

Tension rises...sorry to see the Phoenix suffer a poor fate so soon! Bioweaponry piques my interest. You've also managed to squeeze in some nice inter-character dialogue.

And nice take on the El Aurians. I've always loved their race; their history just seems so mysterious, cryptic, and well, tragic.

Hehe...Mr. Lar'ragos and your sarcasm...

Author's Response:

Pava can be a pill when he's irked, certainly. ;-)  Glad you enjoyed my take on the El Aurians and their unique talents.

Wow! An amazing chapter here - tense, kind of like the calm before the storm. I especially loved how you described the El-Aurian - i don't know if anyone has ever described their 'ability' before, but I love what you've done with it.
Well done!

Author's Response:

Thanks.  And yes, this is very much the calm before the storm.

From STFSA.net:

Star Trek: Gibraltar, written by Sam Redfeather, is set in the post-Dominion War era of the Trek timeline.  The story follows Captain Donald Sandhurst as he assumes command of the aged Constitution-class refit USS Gibraltar in a resource-limited postwar Starfleet.  A former chief engineering officer with a well-earned reputation, Sandhurst's first command in Embers of the Fire comes with a mission to a planet within the former Cardassian Union known as Lakesh.  Already a Federation starship has been badly damaged with a majority of her crew killed due to mine activity in orbit; Gibraltar, along with the Nebula-class heavy cruiser USS Phoenix investigate the incident closely.

There's no honeymoon for Captain Sandhurst as he is tried against working with a crew mostly unknown to him while at the same time getting to know how to handle his new command.  Only six chapters in, and I'm already enraptured by the action between security chief Lieutenant Lar'ragos and executive officer Lieutenant Commander Ramirez on the ground and Sandhurst up above.  Redfeather's prowess as a storyteller is clear as he opens the novel with engaging characters and a plot that grips you tightly from the very first chapter.  He does not ignore character development and embraces a clear line of exposition through dialogue and action against an enemy with as-yet-unknown aims.

I highly recommend this series to anyone looking to jump in with both feet into a new Expanded Universe series, and while I may be biased (being a fellow UT author), I think that Sam's Gibraltar is a rock-steady series you can count on for quality adventures.

Okay, can I just say HELL YES!

Pava crushes me. The scene with Ramirez was perfection!!! Just perfection.

Author's Response:

Much obliged   Glad you enjoyed their little combat-zone conversation in between the action.

Huh! The plot thickens; I'm kinda curious to see what happens to the Phoenix next. Great backstory, too, with your surface team.

So, Sam, are you gonna post the rest? ;-)

Author's Response:

I'm working on it. :-)  I'm retooling the chapters as I post them, which takes a good bit of time.  Your patience is appreciated. ;-)
