Based on the unique design of the Enterprise-C, the Pearl is assigned to Captain Henry "Hank" Harrison and dispatched to a colony on the outskirts of the Federation, New Haven, to investigate a suspected Maquis plot.

What Hank and his crew discover is something far more dangerous ... and destructive.

A murder mystery!  Interesting start.

I really loved these lines:

Hank could see that he didn’t like giving out unpleasant answers, which made him wonder how he ever made it to the rank of admiral in the first place. In Starfleet, there is always an unpleasant answer to give.

How true.

“Nothing,” Hank said as he got up and moved closer to the admiral, “I’d be doing absolutely nothing! There’s not a damn thing out there on the front lines to do anymore, and you know it. Space isn’t about the unknown anymore; it’s all about patrolling this, transporting that.” He grew quieter. “There’s nothing out there left to explore.”

I can see why he would feel that way.  Space is so huge, but after a while, the technology holds you in a stagnant place if you can't make a breakthrough to go further than before.  I can see why Enterprise-D-era people might feel like there was nothing left of the frontier and everything was politics.

Sounds like Hank is a bit of a dedicated drinker ... hopfully that won't be a problem for him.

Author's Response:

Yes, Chaper was filled with rather memorable lines.

Hank himself isn't much of a drinker...actually since he was in dock he figured what the hey. Glad you liked.

Love the descriptions of the Pearl.  Sounds like a beautiful ship.

Also really liked the interactions between the Admirals.  It's always fun when there's friction.

It ws good to learn more about Hank here, as well.  He's quite young, and a little brash!  It will be interesting to see how he develops.

Author's Response:

Yes, the Pearl is a beauty of a shif and the admirals are fracus all their own. As we'll see, Hank starts out brash and young, but by the end of the book he has himself a new view of things.

Party in engineering!

So we meet the brothers ... who are appropriately brotherly.  I hope Mark has a brotherly plan to get Chris back for badmouthing him in front of the captain, though.

So far, Hank seems like a little bit of a loose cannon.  That promises to be entertaining.  I only know him from the multiverse and he seems VERY different there, so I'm wondering exactly what kind of events await that could change him so.  I'll have to keep reading!

Author's Response:

Hank came from humble beginning and as such, the way he is now isn't the way he will be-lots is gonna happen to him.

As for the brothers, its the one thing I've always wanted in Trek-a brother duo of some sort. Everytime their are brothers in trek one seems good while the other is evil; mine aren't this way at all, though Chris is a tad overbearing and cocky, he isn't evil.

"Flirtin' with Disaster" seems like the kind of song the superstitious among the crew might want to avoid.  Why do I think the title is prescient?

Interesting to see the dynamics of this new, haphazard crew.  Continued goodness.

Author's Response:

Yep-needed a good jam to leave dock with and this song fit the mood and the end of the book...so why not, right?

Paul and T'Kel's friendship is nice.  It seems Paul is extremely work oriented and maybe a little reserved, so it makes sense he'd be friends with someone similar.  T'Kel is an interesting character.  She has a bit of conflict with the home culture, it seems.

Sweet tea.  Yum.

I wonder what the holodeck program is.

Author's Response:

Paul and T'Kel are a great study of friendship and tragedy, in my opinion. As you'll see through the book they are a nice pair, though the true fleshing out of their friendship comes in book II.

And it's Bethany!  I love the french fry hanging out of her mouth like in your little story about them when they were kids.  He clearly has it bad for her.  Nothing like a little potential romance to spice things up.

Wow, that was an exciting chapter!  Hank gets thrown into the fire along with his crew, and thanks to some unexpected help, he pulls through all right.  Nice to see Nvrell, and the convo between Hank and the Admiral was very well done.

Well that was an interesting debate, and one to be expected from a colony with the strange goings on they've encountered.  Nice introduction to Daren.  I wonder what his beef is with Starfleet, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.  I was almost sniffly over the note his son left him.  What a sweet kid.  It's hard to be a parent and realize you've failed your kid, even in a small way, but kids are so forgiving.  Nice chapter.

Great chapter.  Wonderful dynamic between Tony and Leo, very real.  Sometimes funny, sometimes biting, but always a good read.  And oh, yeah, Parks?  "Captain's Property."  All.  Over.  Her.  Your friend is wise.  Of course, that's the shipper in me talking.  Loved the descriptions of the flight sim here.  Actually, loved everything about this chapter.

Nice to get that glimpse inside Sandhurst's head as he takes on the challenge of his first command.  The detailed description of the post-war chaos and localized violence is realistic and gripping.

Author's Response:

Thank you for reading and commenting.  :)  Sandhurst is one of those people for whom the Dominion War created opportunities.  If not for the war, it's likely he would never have taken up the challenge of command.

Wow, that was an intense battle.  I really liked Faltyne a lot here.  And Sandhurst was clever, sending the Sojourner on a collision course.

Author's Response:

Sometimes pure desperation breeds brilliance.  Faltyne is an interesting character, and he certainly deserves better than he got in this circumstance.

Pava's a good friend for Sandhurst, keeping him accountable. Every captain needs a friend like that.

I'm glad Ramirez is all right -- I was nervous for her when she got shoved into an escape pod with a head injury.

Wow.  Heartbreaking.

I can't wait to see if future missions help Sandhurst become redeemed in his own eyes, and bring him closer to Ramirez.  I also wonder if Pava is to be trusted.  I mean, if Sandhurst wonders, I have to wonder, right?  After all, they're good friends.

Author's Response:

It's tough for a crew to start off on an assignment with a mission failure, and even harder for a brand new captain.  As for Lar'ragos, he's a complex creature, and nobody (including him) is ever fully sure of what he's capable of.

The problem with reviewing this chapter is that there's just so much to it.  It's densely written (athough it doesn't drag at all ... it's just really full of imagery and moments worth mentioning and I can't mention them all).

I'll hit the highlights, though I wish I had the time and energy to say more.

First of all the conversation between Macet and Spirodopoulos was fantastic.  Spiro's protectiveness of the men under him, and Macet's understanding and even being impressed -- that was a nice moment.

Then the shower ... you manage to always remind us in the little ways what the differences are between Cardassians and humans, and the story is richer for it.  Just top quality world building.  And then Spiro checking himself out in the mirror with the Cardassian armor on ... getting a small moment to think ... that was great.

And of course, we have the Vulcans.  Superbly written and handled from start to finish; the reactions of everyone involved were just spot on, from the Vulcans to the Trill to the human to the Cardassians.  A very moving scene, indeed.

Well done (as always).

Author's Response:

Thank you SO much for reading and reviewing!! :-)

I'm glad you liked the fact that Macet was impressed!  One thing I remembered from "The Wounded" was Picard's mention of his prior encounter with the Cardassians, and he approached them with shields down...and they were NOT impressed.  My explanation of that is that they were not only not in a good mood, but were insulted by the fact that (to their perspective) Picard did not consider them worthy of defending against.  Here, Spirodopoulos shows he DOES recognize the strength of the Cardassians...and Macet respects that.  This working relationship, I think, will be very, VERY different from the one between Picard and Macet.

About the shower...just in case you're interested, that "scrubber"-looking thing is meant to scrub old microscales off, kind of the Cardassian equivalent of using a loofah for exfoliation, except it's more necessary for them.

The mirror scene...that's one I'd really been wanting to write about for a long time.  There was no way seeing himself in that armor--REALLY seeing himself--wasn't going to have an impact!

Glad you liked the katra scene.  I wasn't quite sure about that, about having not just the Cardassians but the human uncomfortable with it...but I have to admit, it does creep me out now that I'm older and I consider the implications.

Thanks again!

Reagan Carter?  Someone's parents had an ironic sense of humor.  I liked the imagery of T'Ela trying to comfort Mike, while also reacting to seeing the worst moment of Earth's history unfold in person, knowing exactly what whas about to happen and not being able to do anything about it.

This piece made me extremely glad that no reporters were actually broadcasting from the upper floors of the WTC on 9/11.  It was bad enough seeing the external view and the jumpers. Then again, one wonders how much more seriously 9/11 would have been taken in the long run had we seen something like this.

Oh, this is a heartbreaking look at a gifted, misunderstood child.  He's his own person, and an enigma to those around him and maybe even to himself, if he thought it was important to think about such things.  And yet the rest of the world is a mystery to him, too.  But the mechanics of things ... that, he understands.  And he clings to it.  I think any child who grew up gifted, or an outsider, can appreciate this piece.

It did break my heart that the mechanics of his life have already sunk in.  Cry = frown.  Therefore, do not cry.  *Hugs baby Scotty*

Loved this.
