I'm a sucker for good lower decks stories and this was very well done.

The flashbacks were a neat way to give us a rounded background on your protagonist and it was all nicely interwoven into Trek lore.

You always root for the redshirt but in the end ... it's always just a few more steps until they would have been safe.

Great story.

Author's Response:

This is not my usual fare, but one day this story popped into my head and wouldn't let me be.  It's meant as a tribute to all the red shirts who gave their lives.  We often knew little to nothing about them, and I wanted to make them real, human, give them a life and friends - people who would miss them when they were gone.  I'm pleased if I managed to accomplish this.

Thanks for the positive feedback.  As I said, this is a serious departure from my usual stuff, and I wasn't sure how it would be received...

It's hard to be the son of genius as Ashok has leared first hand.

He clearly followed his own path eventually, but the question remains, has it made him happy?

A great litte backstory to one of your less high-profile characters.

Author's Response:

Ashok's life is an unfortunate story of repeated themes.  'Failed' son of an engineering genius who has become a capable engineer, but definitely no Scotty.  Now, of course, he's chief engineer on a starship whose captain is twice the engineer he is.  Sandhurst doesn't rub it in his face, quite the contrary, but Ashok knows it to be the truth regardless.

Treacherous Waters by Gibraltar, Galen4    Rated: M    Liked  Reviews (45
Summary: Past Featured Story

Gibraltar is pulled from her duties in occupied Cardassian territory to escort a diplomatic mission to the Gamma Quadrant.  When tragedy strikes, Captain Sandhurst finds he and his crew isolated on the far side of the galaxy and faced with the very real possibility of re-igniting hostilities with the Dominion.

However, unknown to Gibraltar, the starship Intrepid is also currently assigned to the Gamma Quadrant on a secretive mission of the utmost delicacy.  Captain Aubrey and his crew must endeavor to discover the true nature of the threat that faces both ships, as well as avert a tragedy that could result in the deaths of billions.

This story is a crossover with Galen4's Star Trek: Intrepid.

Here's what I said about this over at the TrekBBS:

Great ending. Really. It makes total sense that Shantok would have caught a glimpse of Aubrey's unusual past. I like that she comes clean and I like even more that she puts the man on the spot about it.

Aubrey should be relieved that he doesn't have to hide this anymore amongst the skeletons in his closet. At least not from his first officer.

Of course now he will have to worry about S31 coming after her. But it's not as if she can't protect herself as she has clearly demonstrated. Of course that opens up a whole other can of worms.

This crew has some issues and I'd love to read more about these guys.

Terrific story through and through. Congratulations to both of ya.

Author's Response: And another public "thank you". Your supportive comments and continued attention are always appreciated!

Very nice.

I like Sisko in this story and the previous one as well. He's clearly no Picard. He doesn't dance around the issue but goes straight to the point of the matter, even if it is ugly.

He knows it has to be done even if it means to offend the Bajorans.

A bit disturbing to see Kira this helpless but that seems to be a theme here.

Nicely done.

Nice story.

I like how you weaved in the old (pre-TOS) with the new. A relationship between Pike and Number One is very plausible and so are the ambitions she shows here which to her are clearly more important than her relationship with Pike.

Nicely done.

Author's Response: Thanks! I'm glad you liked the story. I wanted to explain why Number One was missing from the movie (aside from the obvious, that Spock and Kirk wouldn't have been able to step up if she'd been there). Is her career more important to her than her relationship? Yes, but it's not like she hadn't tried and ultimately failed in sustaining both.

The galley requisitions were a total hoot and clearly designed to drive our favorite engineer to slow insanity before making him face certain death.

It's been awhile since I've watched the Enterprise episode this relates to but I was surprised how much information the government had about the Xindi weapon before it hit. Granted it was far too late to do anything about it at that point but I thought it was the Enterprise crew who put most the details together. I could be mistaken on that point.

Regardless I like the notion that they know what's about to hit them but are unable to stop it. The sense of helplessness here is palpable.

I had also forgotten how significant that attack was. With casualty numbers that high, it must easily rank as the most devastating single attack in Earth history. A 9/11 of the 22nd century if you will and yet so much worse.

Terrific job of showing us the impending doom here. Part 2 is likely going to be a lot more difficult to digest.

Well I was right about this one being a tough read. And where I likened this to 9/11 before, the much more apt comparison is probably Katrina, especially considering the scenes of desperate survivors fighting for their lives and the cadets doing all they can to bring back a few more souls.

The contemporary feel of this future and of Starfleet makes the story even more effective. At times this does not feel like science fiction at all. This is no far removed tale taking place in the distant future were people and things can be beamed away in an instant, instead you immerse us in a world and a disaster most of us are familiar with at the very least via the images we've all seen on CNN and the movies. Albeit on a much more scary and devastating level.

The ending you chose was interesting and gave us no closure at all which I suppose is alright as you had already opened the story with the aftermath. What we get instead is a sense of the ongoing rescue effort which is going to take it's toll on these young cadets who like most other rescuers are likely going to continue their efforts until long after the point of exhaustion.

Very sad but also undeniably a very powerful story. Well done.

Not a great many answers here, except that we learn that the Federation did exist but does so no longer, it's demise likely connected to that of the human race.

Mr. Africa, besides having an awesome name, is quite the interesting character with an impressively unnatural lifespan.

I remember this story. And I remember the doctor from 'Buried History'. Her experience as a captive here helps to explain her relative coldness in that story.

And while Picard seems to have dealt with his own Cardassian torture much better something tells me that your doctor had much worse to endure than he ever did.

Author's Response:

As yes, you are probably one of the few who remembers her from Buried History [or read it LOL], but you do get a pretty good idea of who she is afterwards from that . Cold is certainly one word to describe her afterwards. This should explain more why she has such a difficulty relating to others. From Buried History you would have garnered some details of what she endured. Some details that hopefully will be explored and fleshed out here. Including her escape and the method of it all. But yes I do intend to put her through more than what Picard went through.

This is a fine, detailed look at one of your most fascinating characters. It is also a hard story to read, as we have a good idea what will happen to this young, bright-eyed doctor. It's a bit like watching Titanic. You know how it's going to end.

And what is it with doctors being great tennis players, anyway?

Author's Response:

Maybe it is the early diagnosis of tennis elbow or something? Really don't know why I went for that in my 'pilot' episode. But a bit of in-canon continuity that no one else might have known. LOL.

Yes one of the greatest challenge to this is the whole Titanic aspect to it. But I guess we will just have to sit and wait for the iceberg and what exactly happens when the iceberg hits. I'm glad though that you find Caitlyn fascinating. She's certainly dark when you meet her later so at least I have a point to go to from this bright-eyed doctor. Thank you CeJay for reading and commenting.

What an excellent chapter about the domestic life of two fairly different Starfleet officers. We don't get to see these kind of things very often which makes this so much more fascinating.

Samantha Ryan is a real task master alright and it's fascinating to see the woman in the role of the workaholic, super-ambitious professional for a change. It is clear who wears the Admiral pants in this family.

And yet while all the demands she puts on her husband and daughter seem excessive at some point, in the end we learn that under all her stern perfectionism she remains a caring and loving mother and wife.

Excellent stuff!

Summary: The dying years of the 24th century.

After defeating the Dominion and ending the threat of the Borg, the member worlds of the United Federation of Planets may well have hoped to finally find peace. After the dramatic destruction of Romulus, though, chaos seems destined to wrack the Alpha and Beta Quadrants for the forseeable future.

As both the Romulan and Klingon Empires draw ever closer to total collapse, a single man escapes from one of Starfleet’s few high security prisons and gathers a group of mismatched thieves, hackers and conmen to pull off the coup of the century: steal from Section 31 itself…

The players:

The Mastermind

Jules: A mysterious man with a shadowy past, his motivations for wanting to steal from Section 31 are as shaded as his knowledge of covert operations.

The Grifters

Eloria: A Kriosian empathic metamorph with a genetic fault that prevents her from imprinting a final mate, she has found her place in the galaxy as a high-class escort… and a formidable con artist.

Laezar: A Chameloid male serving a term in a Klingon prison, he has links to Section 31 and may hold the key to deciphering their final goal.

The Muscle

Ki’mel: A female half-Romulan, half-Klingon, she is a descendant of the Carraya IV settlement, trained in the fighting ways of many Alpha and Beta Quadrant races.

The Thief

Tag: A young Ferengi male with no lobes for business but a talent for pickpocketing and elaborate theft.

The Hacker

Elim Dejar: A former operative of the Obsidian Order with a few financial problems and a very angry bounty hunter on his trail.

As their plan unfolds, though, every single one of them will realise that they are wading in waters too deep to handle, and facing a chilling secret that could see the unravelling of the Alpha Quadrant itself...
