Bio: Having only recently been able to find the time to reconnect with the Trek universe I love, I was not at all sure how to refresh my bio. I finally settled on the following:

I won’t tell you how old I am, but I was 15 when the Enterprise streaked across America’s TV screens for the first time ever. I have two sons, two daughters-in-law, one grandson (a just turned thirteen gamer), and two granddaughters (along with them comes one steady boyfriend and one soon-to-be grandson-in-law).

Previous to Katrina, I made a decent supplemental living painting murals. Now my day job is forensic accounting related to claims adjusting. Most people think that juxtaposition is weird – go figure. My sons have been instructed that if I ever come up missing they should call Pixar Studios and ask for the doughnut trolley lady. (I would actually pay those people to let me peer over their shoulders while they work their magic.)

I have lived in a little hamlet about 80 miles north of New Orleans for more than 20 years - which is why reference to south Louisiana is a thread that runs through most of my stories - and is fitting, because my favorite character, the much misunderstood and often underestimated Christine Chapel, was born in New Orleans.

Other than Unsung Heroes (a collaboration with Sam Pengraff and into which I still managed a reference to New Orleans) my stories are all TOS - my first Trek love.

Alas, it has been another long hiatus in writing, not to mention posting stories, and I hope to post a revised story soon, with more to come later.

Meanwhile, I am grateful for the comments and reviews of my older stories. They inspired and encouraged me to set out on the journey and boldly go forward into the future once again.

Kestrel - Hunting Grounds by Miranda Fave    Rated: T    Liked  Reviews (263
Summary: Past Featured Story

The USS Kestrel, an aging Miranda class, serving as part of the Border Service has the thankless task of patrolling some of the murkier corners of the Federation. As the seat of Federation power in a dangerous and wild region of space, the Kestrel acts to paraphrase her firebrand captain, Captain Gregory McGregor, as the rule and the law, the line in the sand, the first and last line of defense for the Federation.

"So we can't be calling in the cavalry at the drop of a hat. We are the cavalry. We stand the line, we duke it out, we shout them down, we clean their windscreens, and we set out the welcome mat. It's not all bad you know."

This is the first story featuring the ramshackle, rough and ready crew of the Kestrel. I'd call them an unorthodox crew but hey isn't every crew unorthodox in their own way!

Led by the acerbic, sarcastic, bombastic, over the top, pain-in-the-ass, coarse and unprofessional Captain Gregory McGregor. Just the type of behaviour to get stuff on the border done! There's no time for Jean-Luc's niceties here!

The Border Dogs might be seen as the ‘poor cousins' of the Fleet and the Miranda might be seen as the ‘Ford pick-up of Starfleet' but the Kestrel in the humble opinion of her Captain shows the Fleeters how to do things the proper way.

Although the HQ series is extremely technical, the stories are action packed and held my interest.

Although the plot is as thick as Andorian quicksand, it pulled me in (and may you burn in the Divenium for pulling me through the wormhole into this universe, I was quite content in my little TOS world).

I appreciate the intricacy and the technology. I made the effort to Wikipedia anything I needed to understand better and was educated in the process. MuSpace is an extremely intriguing concept.

The only suggestion I have is to temper the intricacy with more narrative that is non-technical. As I read, I realized I would have to go back and read the story again, ignoring the mind-bending technical detail, and concentrate on the plot and the underlying story.

Example: When we went to see Avatar, we chose the 3D theatre. The effects were spectacularly awesome. However, they nearly obscured the message, which was an indictment of Manifest Destiny. It was only very adept handling of the story that made it outshine the 3D – for me. Most of my acquaintances who saw the movie totally missed the message. Perhaps I simply look beyond the obvious and they don’t.

Slowing down the pace to prevent information overload might appeal to more individuals, including me, who can better appreciate the technology if they have a chance to digest one concept before being hit hard between the eyes with another, and another, and another….

I look forward to the posting of Episode 5!

KayCee

Author's Response:

An excellent review and my humble thanks are extended.

Star Trek HQ was influenced by the idea that Trek fanfiction would be more interesting if it were reminiscent of an actual script and, among many other things, submerge us in a consistent world of innovative, life-changing treknology to help sustain the believability of the story (and even if it meant occasionally wearing goggles to minimize the pain of getting repeatedly hit betwixt the eyes!)

Your suggestion to temper the intricacy of a story with more non-technical narrative is well received. I understand the analogy you draw with Avatar, too, and agree that sometimes the technology used in the making of a movie can also interfere with the delivery of the message. I can learn from that, as we all must learn from the misguided attempts at Manifest Destiny of big business in the past, especially big industry. The quest for Unobtainium is at least as old as civilization itself, and is the ultimate folly if it destroys our planet in its pursuit.

I love your comment about my burning in the Divenium. Your level of comprehension of Star Trek HQ astounds me and I don’t need to tell you how satisfying that is for a writer. I’m pleased if I played some small role in increasing your appreciation of the TNG era of Trek.

I will post Episode 5.

Samuel.

Sam,

I just read your story. I am having a hard time forming any other words than - Wow!

The narrative was beautifully scripted. The twist at the end again took me by surprise - and I should have been prepared after "The Raft." You crafted the story in such a way that the ending, although it sneaks up on you, is sadly perfect.

You left the clues but wove them into the fabric of the story so well the reader only recognizes, and appreciates, them at the end. My only defense can be that I was enjoying the narrative and dialog so much that I was hypnotized.

Cudos! Now I understand why you appreciate the little bit of mystery I fold into my stories.

If this story got Fifth Place, I can only imagine how good First through Fourth are.

KayCee

Author's Response:

I’m very honored, Kaycee, thank you, but a little flabbergasted too! I’m struggling for the proper words to convey my appreciation for the great review, but even more so for my appreciation for the interesting person, and superb creative writer, that wrote that review. You’re 5 out of 5 stars in my book.

I was very fortunate to have received two invaluable critical reviews while the story was still in the early draft stage, and I feel I owe the lion’s share of whatever success this story has attained to these generous souls, who prefer to go unnamed. They had the courage to give me their honest appraisals, bare knuckles and all, and I am very grateful. The experience has left me convinced that writers can truly fluorish when they are members of an altruistic community that derive joy as much from the success of others as themselves.

Samuel.

Summary:

In the spirit of fun and adventure I humbly extend a challenge to the many fine writers of Ad Astra: Write a story that is within the universe of Unsung Heroes. It’s a round robin event organized as an open series meaning that you can post your own stories to the series, the various stories adding together like the chapters of a book. Prequel, sequel, TNG mirror universe – the galaxy’s the limit!

The instructions are simple. Read Star Trek HQ first and then come up with your own story that plays within the same ‘virtual sandbox’. Some good ideas for additional stories might be: ‘What did Amy do next?’, or, ‘What happened to Doctor Dunmore when he returned to Starfleet Command?’

And what of our new enemy? Although little is known about him, his powers of creation and destruction are very real. Originating from an entirely new faction of the Borg, it appears that the collective has changed its views on the importance and role of the individual. Can this Borg Homunculus – this drone that is not a drone – spawn entire new cubes faster than Starfleet can scream retreat?

If you send an email to pengraff@telus.net and request The Unsung Heroes Technical Guide I’ll send you some important information on how the technology that tried to save Commander Worf worked. Your story does not need to use any of this technology – it’s available merely as technical backstory that you might find useful.

I hope it’s as much fun for you as it has been for me!

I did not think the title would work until the very last paragraph, no doubt planned as well. In this story, you lead the reader down one path and then skillfully maneuver her or him onto another path that leads to the actual focus of the challenge without belaboring the point.

I am sooooo late in posting this review!

Since I read the first draft a few months ago, I can say with authority that this is a wonderful and finely honed final version. You have demonstrated not only Soong's lack of conscience but given a viable explanation of how the Borg began their march through the galaxy gobbling up whole cultures.

It is scary to think of the similarities between Dr. Soong's approach and the indoctrinated Hitler youth/aryan breeding programs in the 1930s. (I watched The Third Reich again last night.)

The ending is fair warning for the next 'elephant in the room' we may encounter.

Great job!! (No, this is not the comprehensive review I promised, I am still working on that to do it justice.)

Great Job! - KayCee

Author's Response:

Thank you for the review KayCee, and the generous remarks. The story goes only so far as describing the first few baby steps of the Borg, as I imagined them, and of course by the time we see the Borg in Q Who almost a thousand years later they have morphed into a potent and merciless force completely absent of altruism, justice, compassion or any sense of the moral high ground.

Your comparison of Soong’s Borg to the Third Reich is I think a very valid one, although as you know they are just another member of a long line of conquerors and twisted thinkers who stand proudly beneath their “liberator” banner as they meticulously dilute and downplay individual rights. Hitler himself made a number of eerily Borg-like comments intended to diminish the importance of the individual, with this one perhaps the most telling: “It is thus necessary that the individual should finally come to realize that his own ego is of no importance in comparison with the existence of the nation, that the position of the individual is conditioned solely by the interests of the nation as a whole.” http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quotes/fascism

As long as freedom exists so too will the temptation away from it, and if the number of ‘authoritarian regimes’ in the world today is any indication, then the subject is as relevant today as it ever was. As Thomas Jefferson said, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”

Sam:

For an a Trek fan whose focus is primarily TNG you have an uncanny grasp of what I consider the best elements of TOS - as well as a mastery of descriptive narrative.

The countdown of Spock's 'errors' is quintessential McCoy, the "So let's summarize..." so Kirk.

My favorite line: "But where a hot red planet burned now ran fields of cotton, magnolias, and yellow jasmine. Provenance, his provenance."

As with all your work, I liked this story upon reading it under it's original title, before the new ending. The new ending is especially appealing because it offers a more respective treatment of my favorite character but gives more depth to Spock's character and reaffirms his dedication to his friends.

Great story!
