Oh, Lord. What is it with you and making characters lovable? And then tragedy. I liked Stadi and T'prena, and now they're both dead and it's not particularly fair, is it?
I like the lower decks perspective. I think you could probably use a few more commas. I like that it wasn't the big guns you were viewing all of this through, but those who wouldn't live to see the end of it. The descriptions are decent. The ambivalence of Stadi as she tries to figure out how to feel about Tom Paris. And, of course, your smiling Vulcan.
Someday, you should revisit it. (But only after Kestrel.)

I really like this short glimpse at characters that could have made a real impact on the show had they been allowed to live. Stadi was not only a looker, she could have been a terrific foil to the young and swashbuckling Tom Paris and a rivalry between the two could have made for some interesting story potential. And and of course an emotional Vulcan would have been story telling gold.
You fleshed out these minor characters so well here, it makes their demise twice as tragic and I find myself wishing we'd had a chance to get to know them even more.
Great stuff.

Enjoy that.
Always nice to see the lower deck characters get fleshed out. Two good choices for viewpoints characters.

Just a shame that the writers didn't utilize the characters as well as you did.It could have made for some interesting plots along the way.
Author's Response:
Thanks. Had actually thought of doing a revised Voyager story but an awful lot of work in that. I actually really enjoyed the show, despite the many criticisms that can be thrown at it. In many ways, of all the premises put forwards of the various Trek series apart from TOS itself, I think it had the most potential. Strong story arcs and character development, regular and reoccurring guests from the lower decks, with an overall mission and hope to encapsulate it, were all there but the execution was a little off. Thanks Mistral for the review. It always rocks to get a review or comment from you.

Touching story about an otherwise unknown and unseen person in the background of the pilot. A nice, if sad, reminder that every life is precious. Great job!
Author's Response:
Thanks very much for the comment Mcfergeson. Yeah, that was the kicker about the pilot. A number of people who seemed to have a little potential as characters ended up killed off.
[Voyager actually was very good at creating little background, one-off episode characters but sadly missed the chance to use them to greater effect. Though of course for Stadi and T'prena they had the excuse of being killed off so as not to be fully utilised. I'm thinking the misfits from Good Shepherd, Equinox crew and of course the other Maquis members.]
Of these characters I think Stadi in particular stuck in many a person's consciousness after the pilot. Alas, she had the misfortune of having the same set skills as a certain Mr Paris so was surplus to requirement.
Thanks for reading.
